The loss is the imagined future that you would have continued to grow in your mind into something that becomes regret for a non-existent thing. Find out if there's anything there. If there is, great. If not, then you know where you stand and can use your energy for things that have potential.
A bonus for just saying something without expectations is that you'll be more yourself, so anything that does happen is based on a realistic setting and not some planned outcome that distracts you.
The only thing worse than the mind games some people play with others is the mind games you play with yourself. But you can stop doing the latter.
