just finished another rewatch of sg1 and the movies and in the middle of rewatching universe. sg1 is pure nostalgia i love it so much.
universe is such a big departure its jarring. i forgot how much religious stuff and melodrama it has. a lot of the episodes it feels like everyone is standing around waiting for something to happen while they have interpersonal conficts. theres so little exploring of anything. like all the planets are so boring, and they spend like no time trying to fix up the ship and explore it. atlantis got so much material out of just messing around in the city, yet in universe they spend all their time on the ship and the only thing they explore is rush finding the bridge and keeping it to himself like an asshole. im sure theres a bunch of behind the scenes fuckery that made universe what it is, but its sad that this is the last stargate we've had for so long.
Interesting. In what way? I didn't feel like Universe had any more religious undertones than SG-1 did. Though I absolutely agree on the melodrama.
one of the characters in season one being overtly christian and borderline proselytizing but never being called on it, the star system that was magically put there apparently to help them, the whole mission of the destiny being explicitly suggested to be finding evidence of god or something, the people who stayed in the special star system just showing up one day with no explanation a galaxy away but all dying with literally no explanation as to how that happened.
theres plenty of religious subtext too, with all the characters treating the ship almost as a prophetic entity, but so complex its almost unknowable, telling it their problems and it acting in mysterious ways to help them. the crew of the destiny also seems to have almost zero agency in most episodes, just kinda reacting to things happening to them but never taking the initiative to materially change anything. the one episode where the ship is "testing" colonel young and most of the rest of the characters just go along with this as a sign from the ship that it chose him to be leader, implying a sort of divine right of kings bestowed by the ship.
i could go on but once you start looking for it theres tons of religious themes throughout the series. they werent particularly subtle about it a lot of times, but sometimes they are. compare this to sg1 where most of the story is about a bunch of apparently secular people adventuring across the galaxy telling people their gods are fake and theres a logical explanation for everything thats happening. sg1 depicts religion, but it almost never endorses it, where universe seems to be endorsing religion at almost every story beat.
idk you might disagree, but im certainly not the first person to suggest this. might be worth a rewatch, see for yourself.
I will definitely keep that in mind if I ever rewatch it again.
My understanding is that the producers basically pulled a Rick Berman and got rid of everybody who had ever disagreed with them on SG1 and Atlantis, and Universe was the result.
