I'm doing a project. A special project.

For this project I'd need to whip up both Legion and NCR cavalry. I've found the above fan art with some wonderfully horrible mutated and two headed horses. To me this look is appropriate, despite the strong implications from FNV writers that neither side used horses (going so far as to call their inclusion in 'All Roads' a mistake).

However if you saw troops from either side on mutant horses would your initial reaction be that it felt appropriate or not. Would the vibes be off?

The Legion, maybe. But the NCR is a diesel-punk state. I would much imagine them using motorcycles, modified bicycles, or other forms of wheeled single-passenger transport, compared to mutated horses or other animals (unless you want to invoke some crazy brahmin genetic experiment).

The Legion is more of a wild card because there is a possibility they could have assimilated mounts from the conquering of the 86 tribes. While it's unlikely they would have used mutated dogs for mounts (remember Ulysses's lines about how they broke the Hang-dogs), it's possible that another form of mutated animal mount (perhaps from one of their conquered states), could be utilized.

Overall, I think the NCR would not use animal mounts. They would use mechanical vehicles. The Legion has options though, potentially based on their regional roots in the US.

Hard agree. The Legion would require a lot of travel over some of the most mountainous and rural regions in America. While they would also have interstate highways like the NCR, they probably have plenty of settlements outside of the reach of major highways. Considering how important horses were in travel in the American west historically, if they had horses they would use the shit out of them.

The most likely reason they don't is that horses went extinct in North American, as 200 years would've been more than enough time for them to make it south if populations existed in Canada. I don't think this makes much sense in a world where cows, deer, and other large herbivores survived. My guess is that them not showing in the early games and the smaller size of the 3d games made none of the designers feel like introducing them.
