Good luck on the latter. Nowadays the can bus is wired straight to the infotainment system.
Even back in the day there was stuff like this going on. I had a 1986 Pontiac 6000. I replaced the head unit with a cd player and the cruise control stopped working. The cruise control wires went through the head unit.
I'm sure there will be some creative hacking or something of the like...
