I know WhatsApp is like the international standard but you all need to get off that shit. Meta should be boycotted globally.

[–] baggachipz@sh.itjust.works 42 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I don’t understand why this is just ok everywhere. People are swearing off American tech in droves, yet somehow this one gets a free pass.

[–] spaciouscoder78@lemmy.ml 19 points 1 month ago (1 children)

FYI a lot of Indian government agencies use WhatsApp for their everyday operations. Most Indians don’t care about the US stuff, all they need is WhatsApp

[–] baggachipz@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 month ago (4 children)

I still don’t get it. If WhatsApp is ok, why not Facebook messenger? Why not instagram dm’s? Meta alleges that WhatsApp is “encrypted”, but why would anyone believe that? Is “trust me bro” good enough for the government of a nuclear power? And yes I know the US is no better, but India’s government relying on a commercial product from an American spy company is bonkers. It would be like the the EU using WeChat.

[–] irelephant@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The encryption happens client side, so it's easy to verify that it's happening.

Metadata sent with messages (who you're talking to, when the message was sent etc) isn't encrypted.

[–] baggachipz@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 month ago

There’s still no reason to believe that they don’t have a back door to the message content. It’s closed source, and they’re an evil company whose entire business model is surveillance through lack of privacy. I know where I would put my chips.

The last time i haar fb messenger installed is years ago, but it used to drain the battery like crazy. Much more than whatsapp.

[–] pir8t0x@ani.social 1 points 1 month ago

WhatsApp is at least E2EE but Instagram isn't even E2EE. Even Facebook Messenger is safer. Although, out of all the Meta apps, WhatsApp is the safest bet. I'm not necessarily promoting and saying you should use WhatsApp but just saying that it's a safer bet. If you want an actual privacy respecting messaging app, check out Signal. If you wanna be anonymous, use SimpleX Chat

[–] spaciouscoder78@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 month ago

People are too ignorant to care about spyware and privacy. Can't do much about that.

[–] sonofearth@lemmy.world 19 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Tell this to my family who thinks it is the most revolutionary piece of technology ever created and shun me to speak out. :(

[–] PokerChips@programming.dev 9 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (2 children)

Signal has group messaging too. Even has usernames.

Send out messages.. "hey install this privacy messaging app."

Then start making groups then start sending jokes and funny funny videos on the group messaging channels.

Must people will actually do their research when they see it and install it initially.

It's when you try to get people on it with one on one texting is when i find it the most difficult for adoption because you're the only person they will use it with.

Update:

Also, if you have maga friendly family that you still connect with (doesn't sound like the case for you if you're outside the US), just remind them that it's Trump's favorite messaging tool. Just don't invite the bad guys on to your channel then everything is daiseys.

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 14 points 1 month ago (2 children)

[Most] people will actually do their research when they see it and install it initially.

Will they though? Do you know most people? I doubt most people will do research. I think a large share of Lemmers will do the research. But we can be a different kind of people in certain aspects.

[–] Ofiuco@piefed.ca 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I think a large share of Lemmers will do the research.

I doubt it, a lot of lemmy users just repeat ad nauseum whatever they read here but don't care about analysing it, understanding it or admitting everyone's context is different.

You can see it in this thread, just saying that everyone should quit everything meta they get their feeling of superiority, but ignore how hard it is to convince a common person to switch, try or upgrade whatever they use.

You can see it a lot on the linux vs windows discussions, most show 0 empathy or understanding when it comes to other's needs and use cases.

I see propaganda news from my country and it gets a lot of upvotes, nobody cares about researching why someone from the same country could get mad about it.

So yeah... I don't share your optimism about lemmy users.

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

You're probably right. Even more to my point! People don't do research, in general. 😩

[–] PokerChips@programming.dev 0 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

I'm my experience, Yes. I just say it's privacy oriented and when I say research, basically they will look up a search result or 2 and call it a day.

It's still not a silver bullet. People will text me on sms and I text back on signal. They start to get the picture.

But getting people on group chats are key. Still a long way to go because they aren't going through all this strategies when they create groups in other friends groups.

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

[In] my experience

Anecdotal evidence might be uplifting but, alas, not really general proof. But I'm really glad you found a way to get people to switch! I see your persistence and it's impressive. ✊

[–] sonofearth@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Tried that 3 years and got called out as paranoid. 🥲

[–] neobunch@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

I'll contend the biggest play Meta ever did was buying Whatsapp. They saw the app had reached critical mass and was an actual necessity, unlike their facebook crap which only appeals to a certain subset of people.

And now we're all stuck with it and Meta's enshitification and progressive privacy violations.
