and I cut them diagonally just because that's not how a sub should be cut

But a sub is just a sandwich.

Depends on the sandwich orientation when cutting. If you lay the sandwich side to side then cutting across the short length is vertical. Laying the sandwich so it's point away from you would make that cut horizontal.
nah, horizontal means perpendicular to the main axis. there's only one main axis for a sub. and roll doesn't matter
