My best advice is that if it seems inactive, that means you should subscribe to a bunch of stuff and switch to hot, top 6 hour and scaled. Active is the default and seems the least active.
The comments in this thread will give you a great idea on how most people act around here. Hate the idea and not the user and you should be fine.
Your "also plz be kind :D" comment tells me that you're going to go through a bit of withdrawal on the hate and drama. It's great here even even though we have a few trolls and bots.

Reddit keeps everyone engaged with hate and drama. They have bots that go after people to troll. Of course, there are the real trolls as well. So far, we're a little lighter than that.
