One thing to note is more often people here reply with genuine comments and in good faith. There is also a lack of clever snarky comments and baiting due to the lack of karma system.

[–] Cat_Daddy@hexbear.net 48 points 3 weeks ago

And the lack of karma also leads to more comments, as well. I liken lemmy to what the internet used to be like, where conversations among strangers happened regularly. It's very rewarding and wholesome. Definitely not the "antisocial media" that reddit prides itself on.

If you haven't already then you need to switch to Linux

[–] RaoulDuke85@piefed.social 39 points 3 weeks ago

Then keep reminding everyone you use Arch.

Take advice from Detective Frank Drebin

"Like a blindman at an orgy, I was going to have to feel my way through"

[–] onTerryO@lemmy.ca 50 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

"Like a midget at a urinal, I was going to have to keep on my toes"

It’s smaller, but more personable. It’s full of neurodivergent, queer, and tech oriented people. It has its own inside jokes—you will want to read up on beans.

Overall, I have enjoyed the experience. Sometimes, I have been surprised when people can’t detect obvious jokes or sarcasm, but then I remember how many people here are neurodivergent and try to reply with something kind and straightforward so we’re on the same page.

People tend to be very leftist compared to the rest of the internet, so it’s good to remember that the opinions here are not always representative of the world at large.

A huge chunk of Lemmy is German, and that part of the community remains a total mystery to me because I don’t speak German. They seem cool from afar.

Which communities you are able to see depends pretty heavily on which instance is your home base—I’m with DB0, and we federate with pretty much everyone who isn’t doing something detestably illegal, but LemmyWorld is much more exclusive with who they federate with, so their users don’t see the same instances that I do. Pick a home instance that fits you best because it will matter a lot as you find communities.

You will see interactions between communists and anarchists. Try to remember that you don’t have to comment on everything you might disagree with.

Welcome to the Fediverse—we’re happy to have you.

Please do not drag the same tired jokes over from reddit (e.g. broken arms). Stick around long enough to learn Lemmy's tired jokes.

[–] Broadfern@lemmy.world 32 points 3 weeks ago (10 children)

Beans, how not to poop for 5 days, ed Sheeran, and I use arch btw? I’m sure I missed a bunch, too.

[–] 4am@lemmy.zip 26 points 3 weeks ago

How not to poop for 5 days was the first fediverse legend I got to personally witness, good times

Each Lemmy instance has its own rules, and each community as well. Please read them before posting, because rule #3 for this community is:

  1. Not regarding using or support for Lemmy: context, see the list of support communities and tools for finding communities below

Don't do shit like "lemmy etiquette". Just follow human etiquette and be a pleasant human and everything will be fine.

Also stop worrying so much about "doing anything bad". Sometimes you fuck up, sometimes you upset people, it's no big deal. You're good.

We are all mostly human here. Just remember that. Hope you have a great time on the fediverse!

By ratio, there are way more communists than on Reddit. There are three major groups, anarchists, Marxist-Leninists, and liberals, and each instance tends to have more of one or maybe 2 than the others. Getting a feel for instance culture goes a long way.

Just know that Hexbear has the best users and anyone who says otherwise is not to be trusted.

[–] 4am@lemmy.zip 23 points 3 weeks ago (17 children)

I actually like the hexbears for the most part

It’s the snowflake libertarians who get all bent out of shape when they get called out by a plurality of leftists after chirping about their supposed freedom and they start crying on the timeline about how illegal that should be that gets me

Because lemmy is much smaller, you tend to rub into the same users more often. So if someone comes off as abrasive, blocking them can have a notable impact on your experience.

Dogpiling is worse, and it can pay to know what instance the community you're posting in is, as the games community on hexbear is going to be different than on world.

It's much more "left" than reddit. Notably, while this instance, lemmy.ml, is the flagship instance run by the lead dev, the "ml" stands for marxist-leninist.

Me too! I have been browsing for a month or two and Reddit finally had enough of my “violent rhetoric”. This is like my second post.

So what I am gathering is that here I CAN say that I believe that the only solution to capitalism is a revolution so violent and thorough that Mao would be uncomfortable?

Or nah?

[–] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 26 points 3 weeks ago

Depends on the instance, but generally revolutionary socialism is supported.

A major difference I noticed with Lemmy from my time on Reddit is communities aren't quite as rabid about strict adherence to their topic or gimmick. r/whatisthisthing banned me for seven days once for elaborating what an E6B flight computer is for. Because "This community is for IDENTIFYING the thing, not DISCUSSING the thing!" Not...so much of that around here.

No need to show off. Don't be a snarky asshole. Be nice to people, but be real. Don't be afraid to be weird or answer with an autistic essay. It's okay to dissent, just don't be a fucking asshole about it. Realize that on Reddit, that shit is all bots and Nazi trolls and meek confirming bitches afraid to be real and tell shitty people that they're wrong and exactly why. Welcome. Prepare to have your eyes ripped open.

Each instance has its own vibe. You joined .ml, just a fair warning that a few instances and a chunk of Lemmy users have defederated/blocked it, so you may miss out on some content. Otherwise, pretty chill for the most part.

[–] brain_in_a_box@hexbear.net 21 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Which major instances defed .ml?

I'm like OP from a few months ago. I joined ML because it was easy and sorta anonymous. What's the story on ML? Who defederated? What am I missing?

[–] TankieTanuki@hexbear.net 34 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

It's the devs' test instance.

The devs are Marxist-Leninists. They're the admins of the instance. Therefore the instance has nuanced-to-positive views on Actually Existing Socialist (AES) states, and allows for criticism of Democrats from the left.

It's been defederated by instances whose admins aren't wiling to critically examine their lifetime of capitalist programming and are accustomed to Reddit's universal condemnation of AES states.

It's fairly strafight forward, i just try and follow these two rules.

  1. Don't be a cunt
  2. If in doubt, refer to Rule 1.

It’s pretty much the same but on Reddit it’s ok to be combative and rude with people as long as public opinion approves. Also most of the posts are bots so you aren’t actually being rude to a person there most times.

Please don’t do that here. There are way less bots here so please remember you are speaking to actual humans.

Also political discourse is mostly ok here. Same rules apply with rudeness though. On Reddit you will get quarantined or shadow banned quickly with anything politically charged.

It's the same shit, lemmy has it's own flavour of power hungry unhinged mods (see yepowertrippingbastards /c/yepowertrippinbastards@lemmy.dbzer0.com ). And due to multiple instances some of the vocal users are affected by tribalism (as in "my instance is better, your instance is xyz").

[–] Cracks_InTheWalls@sh.itjust.works 20 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (4 children)

Post frequently. Comment frequently. Make some friends/acquaintances. Try to remember that the folks making posts and comments are generally human (more so than on reddit). Try to be kind. Don't pay too much mind to inter-instance drama unless it's in a light-hearted and fun way (it's simply not worth it otherwise), or has a real impact on your experience (in which case use the blocking tools). If someone named Nicole PMs you ignore it and maybe let your instance's admin team know.

I've been here for two years now. It's generally a great group and I'm happy I joined the API-ocolypse migration from reddit. Welcome! :)

My best advice is that if it seems inactive, that means you should subscribe to a bunch of stuff and switch to hot, top 6 hour and scaled. Active is the default and seems the least active.

The comments in this thread will give you a great idea on how most people act around here. Hate the idea and not the user and you should be fine.

Your "also plz be kind :D" comment tells me that you're going to go through a bit of withdrawal on the hate and drama. It's great here even even though we have a few trolls and bots.

Bots turn down from 10 to 3

Trolls turn down from 11 to 4 (depending on the instance)

Downvotes don't mean anything and your comments can't generally be buried.

Mods/Admins are generally far less petty

Most instances are more open about things that are posted, even if the inhabitants of that instance are less accepting of it.

Every instance has it's own ettiquite, be sure to read the stuff in the welcome.
