Rules

Moderation shall not be arbitrary, and this is a work in progress. We'll try to be as fair as possible, so keep these as a grounding framework:

Be polite. It doesn't matter what the issue is; we have to keep our akhlāq (أخلاق) to seriously high standards.
Keep it ḥalāl (حلال). We humbly require users not to make posts or comments that are against Islam, even technically. This rule along with the first one encompasses nearly everything, but the following rules are for additional clarification and reminder.
No promotion of violence or extremism. It will get removed immediately.
No sectarianism or bigotry. We don't all agree, but we respect each other. It doesn't matter Muslim or non-Muslim.

Apparently it's not allowed for muslims to give me salam but nothing saying I can't initiate it.

Given this, do people expect me to initiate a salam? Or do I just say hi and go about my day.

It is allowed for Muslims to give salam to anybody. Who told you they can't?

It's in the hadith

‘Do not greet the Jews and the Christian’s before they greet you, and when you meet any of them on the road force him to go to the narrowest part of it’ [Sahih Muslim 2167a -Book 39, Hadith 16]

I think it's kind of funny that the link you provided quoting this hadith is only quoting it to explain why it's wrong and Muslims shouldn't believe in such hadiths. It then goes on to quote the Qur'an on why we should give salam. 😂
