You don't have to break it. Just place it in the boiling pot and slowly push down on the pasta. It starts to go soft faster than you think.

They don't taste different when you break them
It's not the taste that's the problem, it's the fact that you can't properly twirl the pasta around your fork like you're supposed to.
Not everyone eats their spaghetti "like you're supposed to"
Some people even cut it with a knife to deliberately get shorter bits that are easier to eat.
And those people are wrong.
You're allowed to be bothered by how other people eat pasta.
But we don't care
And it's okay to be wrong. :P
Let's drop the issue and move on with our lives. There are more important things to argue about.
