usually devs get paid based on number of downloads in these freebie deals

IIRC Epic's deal with devs historically has been just an upfront fee of one-year's worth of projected sales rather than some after the fact payout, at least in general. Bigger names and games that are released onto their storefront with a free week may get different deals, and I kind of assume the stuff they do for already F2P games (giving out cosmetic or premium currency packs) may even be paid for by the devs as an ad, but at least the leaked typical deal details have been that it's all upfront.

Still not worth getting the shitty wizard pogrom game though.

Ok interesting, had heard the other way. I know there's some of that for xbox game pass stuff, based on play-time and whatnot.

But yeah agreed, claiming/downloading/playing can probably only be good for them in one way or another, so just don't do it.
