Europeans have viewed Russians as worse than the Nazis since Soviet soldiers took Berlin.

They still bought billions in Russian gas before the war

The European population will not notice or care, and the EU will never actually go to war against Russia.

Was russiophobia really that common pre euromaidan? I don't remember it that way.

It's in the background radiation of western political discourse for probably several centuries (especially the last one), but it has definitely gotten worse over the last few years. It's obviously just an extension of the European fear of "barbarians" (AKA the disgusting racism and xenophobia which justifies their constant genocides), which has been there for as long as Europe.
