Sickle Cell Anaemia is a recessive expression of a gene that aids in surviving malaria, when the trait is heterozygous sickle cells (which cannot host malaria) are produced when stressed, but not all the time. When carriers of the gene are homozygous in sickle-cell or 'normal'-cell it provides zero or worse protection from malaria, but the heterozygous expression is pretty nice so it stuck around
