Proportional representation locks democratic reforms in. First-past-the-post lets governments erase them overnight.

There are a lot of different election systems. The election system has a huge influence on politics. In a system based on majorities like first passed the pist – mostly used in ancient democracies like UK and US – you'll inevitably get a two party system and one-party governments - basically two alternating one-party systems being all-powerful when in charge, like the Democrats vs the Republicans in the US. Almost every other voting system will yield a poltical system with multiple parties and the need for coalitions and compromise between political factions.
