I'd say it's foreshadowing that when he dies - be it of age or disease or foul play - they are going to assume foul play anyway and go on the attack

TBF, no matter who's in that spot there's always someone after them - you can't please all the people all the time, and all that. There's a reason the Secret Service (SS? Hmmm...) exists, after all.

The Secret Service's role in protecting presidents and presidential candidates precedes WWII and even WWI by a fair margin, so this isn't as clever as you might think.
