Is this an confession that people are now "after him"?
Maybe he should change his ways.
I'd say it's foreshadowing that when he dies - be it of age or disease or foul play - they are going to assume foul play anyway and go on the attack
TBF, no matter who's in that spot there's always someone after them - you can't please all the people all the time, and all that. There's a reason the Secret Service (SS? Hmmm...) exists, after all.
If you don't LEARN from history it tends to repeat itself.
The Secret Service's role in protecting presidents and presidential candidates precedes WWII and even WWI by a fair margin, so this isn't as clever as you might think.
