I wish…

Unfortunately I have to use direct downloads. I don’t have the money for a VPN.

The direct downloads maliciously limit the download speed to 50 kB/s 😭

I have been torrenting my whole life whithout a vpn wtf 😭

Yeah, try that in Germany, let’s see how far you come

[–] Obnomus@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 days ago

Well my country doesn't care, but I'll keep this in mind.

I prefer a seed box to a VPN. The seedbox does all the torrenting traffic and I only ever download from the seedbox sftp server

[–] cyclohexane@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

But aren't seedboxes more expensive? Why prefer them?

I don't trust any of the VPN providers, they are all compromised by intelligence agencies. To use a VPN you are route NIC traffic through their servers where they can port mirror everything. At least some of the VPN providers use open source clients, the ones that provide an app that needs admin rights to run no fucking way would I run that (Nord, Surfshark etc)

A seedbox is totally off your machine and you just create a single ssh session to download from. There is no indication of up stream traffic from your NIC at all secure or otherwise.

But it also requires money like VPNs

Also depends on how much they let you tinker with your host, the seedbox can also be a VPN.

A seedbox is basically just a server which is just a computer, the provider mostly just help you set it up and provide a URL and authentication system for you to access it.

Streaming seems to often be faster than direct downloads, for whatever reason.

Streaming? Of course. It’s heavily compressed after all. But I‘m downloading to archive, preserve and re-watch when I have no internet connection.
