How does this differ from just using an ad blocker though?

One thing that comes to mind is that if you're on iOS you unfortunately can't really run an adblocker on YouTube (sans running it in browser I guess), but you can easily use a VPN.

Also YouTube periodically tries to break adblocking. 99% of the time uBlock origin works, but this could be a backup if they ever succeed.

Oh and non-Android Smart TVs often don't have ad free YT apps available either. You can run those behind a VPN too.

You can. It's called Opera browser. Yea they data mine you but you can even get background play. I know I blasting one of my secret alternatives to giving youtube my money but hey share the love.

I already mentioned the browser option and you can also use Orion for that. It's not as nice to use as the app (though background play is obviously an advantage)

You have to pay for a decent vpn
