Is ReVanced and uBlock are a very secret thing? Why do people look for the VPN alternative, i dont get it.

Sometimes I like to watch on TV via set top box.

God damn it, not again...

deletes system32

[–] AnarchistArtificer@slrpnk.net 12 points 2 days ago (2 children)

It says delete a file, not a folder! Unfortunately, this means that deleting system32 doesn't count, so you need to find something else to delete

[–] Brickhead92@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

Hmm. I don't seem to be able to delete anything anymore. I'll reinstall, get the virus again, then delete something else.

I don't know shit about networking (I failed you, lemmy) but I wonder if you can install a vpn to your router now. I heard they are are often using linux inside?

Yes you can set up routers to route through a VPN, it's a pretty common thing

[–] multifariace@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

I don't know anything about any of these other than I would watch a lot more youtube if it had no ads. I'm gonna need a ublock for dummies manual.

Damn, wish I knew this before I've been paying for YouTube premium for, like, since the beginning of when they first started extorting money out of us. I've had an active thriving YouTube account since 2005. I don't exactly remember when I first started paying them money, but I guess they implemented that frogs-slowly-boiling-in-a-pot-of-water tactic. I am a boiling frog.

Albania. Noted.

That's certainly more complicated than just using UBO...

[–] tenacious_mucus@sh.itjust.works 33 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Cant do that on devices that arent running browsers, or browsers capable of extensions/add-ons. Like games consoles…my xbox would be the only device on my network relying on a VPN for this and other things that my pi-hole cant block.

[–] Saapas@piefed.zip 3 points 1 day ago

For devices that can run Android apps, there's SmartTube, free open source Youtube app that has no ads

Some VPNs have adblockers built in. Or you could just install uBlock Origin for free if you don't have a VPN

[–] Hazzard@lemmy.zip 14 points 2 days ago (11 children)

YouTube is remarkably good at circumnavigating a lot of adblocking, my adblocker blocks ads for pretty much every other app on my phone, except YouTube, so this is a pretty interesting trick, assuming it works. Will definitely be giving this a try.

[–] ChairmanMeow@programming.dev 14 points 2 days ago (1 children)

ReVanced seems to work well.

[–] skulblaka@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Takes 30 seconds to start loading a video nowadays but yeah I haven't watched a YouTube ad in probably 8 years

Odd, not for me. For me it's still quite fast, loads near instantly.

Oh damn, this seems to work. When I'm on my phone I typically use YouTube on Firefox with ublock origin and that works, but I also have the YouTube app which has ads on almost every video. I connected to Albania with NordVPN and watched a few ad-free videos on the YouTube app.

[–] bluesheep@sh.itjust.works 9 points 2 days ago (7 children)

Look into ReVanced for Android or YouTube Plus for iOS. They're nodded clients with built in adblocker and sponsorblock, including more QoL features. I haven't seen and ad in months

How does this differ from just using an ad blocker though?

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 13 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (3 children)

One thing that comes to mind is that if you're on iOS you unfortunately can't really run an adblocker on YouTube (sans running it in browser I guess), but you can easily use a VPN.

Also YouTube periodically tries to break adblocking. 99% of the time uBlock origin works, but this could be a backup if they ever succeed.

Oh and non-Android Smart TVs often don't have ad free YT apps available either. You can run those behind a VPN too.

You have to pay for a decent vpn

[–] glimse@lemmy.world 23 points 2 days ago (1 children)

What on earth is this image formatting

[–] Nioxic@lemmy.dbzer0.com 31 points 2 days ago (2 children)

It isnt true

There is supposedly no ads

But not due to laws preventing it

[–] CluckN@lemmy.world 44 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (3 children)

This is the worst haiku I’ve ever read.

I go out of my way to avoid using products that are advertised at me. Out of spite.

It turns out that this is a question.

[–] kernelle@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 days ago

From my limited testing I did just now I did not get any ads on the official YT app, usually it's 2 per video at least.

[–] BigDiction@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago

No idea on the Albanian law part, but ad stacks can have tiny demand in certain GEOs, and western advertisers don’t want to pay for impressions there so they geo block them.

If you have a vpn chances are you use revanced app or ublock with browser

or just install ublock origin, newpipe or smarttube.
