Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

Renee Good's father, a trump supporter, did not blame trump for this shit. This is the level of mass delusion at work here.

[–] Muinteoir_Saoirse@hexbear.net 67 points 3 days ago

That was her father-in-law (her dead husband's father, who doesn't acknowledge Renee Good's wife, and plans to take her son, his grandson, because he considers the child to "be alone"). Her own father hasn't said much of anything as far as I'm aware, and her parents have hired lawyers to investigate the shooting (the same lawyers who represented George Floyd's family)

There was that guy who went viral last week when directly asked by his son

what if I'm at the mall or something and ICE or Delta force or something comes and kills everyone including me?

Dad says to his face:

Well Trump had a reason for them to be there, guess it's just wrong place wrong time, you probably shouldn't live in California or things like that could happen

[–] purpleworm@hexbear.net 42 points 3 days ago (1 children)

You probably know this but the father's response gets worse as I recall, he goes on to say the people there would have it coming because they're all communists.

Right, if people want to see the brainworms on full display, they can watch the podcast the two parents do with their two kids.

Also they 4 of them went on Hasan's stream the other day which would also be a unique perspective.

[–] purpleworm@hexbear.net 20 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Yeah, its importance shouldn't be overstated since the dad is clearly senile, but I thought that "interview" Hasan did was really interesting from a social standpoint. I'm still not really sure what to make of it.

It was interesting to see more or less what my ROI would be if I tried to talk to one of these guys. It definitely isn't much, but I'd say it makes it obvious that there's no point in "triangulating" like a democrat. They'll just go along with whatever if the leadership is strong, IMO. Obviously the only strong leasers you get in the US are extremely anticommunist so this is what you get.

[–] purpleworm@hexbear.net 19 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I agree that "triangulation" is pointless (big surprise that tailism is bad), but in a way I thought it was sort of hopeful because the mother agreed on many progressive policies and sentiments, and that was with very little argument over the course of less than two hours. I think it began to show the ways that having earnest discussion where you hear people out not to legitimize their views but just to understand them so that you can engage with them in a way that they can understand can get you some degree of progress, at least if the other person is still lucid.

[–] spectre@hexbear.net 10 points 3 days ago

Oh right yeah I agree, I would do it with someone a couple steps less committed to trump than they are. Also depends on getting some information about their class interest and class alignment early on.

I'd be down to chip away at the edges, and the podcast parents will either get with it at a later stage, or they can go down with the Trump ship and take the free healthcare against their will.

Fuck hasan. I’m convinced he’s some bs to steer the left away from the class war. Fuck him and fuck anyone that has anything to do with him. Rich spoiled nepo fuck.

[–] spectre@hexbear.net 15 points 3 days ago

I mean there are many valid criticisms of Hasan, and a good handful of things I don't like personally.

That said, it should be understood that a blanket "fuck Hasan" statement with no elaboration does more to amplify the massive right-wing/Zionist hate mob against him than anything else.

I have concerns and criticisms of the PRC as well, but I know better than to go around saying "fuck China they're state capitalist!" Or something like that (not really what I believe anyway) because no matter how correct my criticisms may be, they will be appropriated by liberals and conservatives due to the rhetorical environment around me.

If you are concerned about Hasan watchers being pulled away to electoralism, then a blanket "fuck hasan" is counterproductive in that sense too. What would be effective is to get involved with discussions and present your criticisms in proper context, otherwise you're sort of pushing his audience away and they'll follow him right down the pro-america electoralism train.

Being poor doesn't make you a better communist.

[–] brognak@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 3 days ago

Iirc that was The Nesscesscary Conversation podcast

[–] architect@thelemmy.club 17 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I don’t trust a single one of them. They will turn on their family and friends for that man.

it's not really for Trump. Chuds don't worship Trump, he's more of a symbolic figure to them than anything real. They cannot let go of their own bitterness, their own ego, their own internal hatred. Trump is just the avatar that lets them all unite and funnel their inherent evil in unison, gives them permission to release their true selves.

These aren't naive bumpkins being mind controlled by the GOP. They are true blue fascists to their core being finally given permission to shed all performative morality.
