Overview:

The community dedicated to boycotting the US until they stop fascism, restore full democracy and start following international law.

Americans have a moral obligation to resist Donald Trump and project 2025 at every turn.

America is a flawed democracy currently being ruled by oligarchs. Stop the backslide! Dont let America become the next Hungary.

America needs to challenge the court rulings of citizens united v. fec and shelby county v. holder, protect the media, implement independent district drawing, and the single transferable vote so they don't end up having people stay home in life-changing elections because they cannot vote for their favourite candidate.

Given the amount of people who are interpreting this as actual news, I feel that satire should be clearly labelled as such in the title. It's embarrassing to have people going around saying "did you hear Patel said..." And then when people check it it's literally a joke.

Everything is is so fucking bonkers right now this didn't even make me flinch. We have DHS saying the guy brandished weapon when all the video contradicts that, and that border patrol guy saying bringing a gun to a protest means your asking to be shot and he assaulted the cops, not the cops assaulted him.

problem is that satire is now just stupid stuff they have not did or say yet. Like satire ten years ago was far fetched relative to what politicians or celebrities or stuff was doing but now its just stuff that is about the same as what they have done recently.

Satire from 10 years ago is less extreme than what's actually happening now.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 2 points 13 hours ago

thats true. you take what is happening today and put it in a satire thing ten years ago and people would be like. man you have to be a bit more believable.

[–] mfed1122@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Yes I agree, it's much harder to tell the two apart these days, which is horrible. All the more reason why it's important to delineate them on sites like Lemmy. I mean, I get that it kind of ruins the joke to put [satire] in brackets at the end of the article title. But it's better than creating misinformation

I live how you think satire is disinformation, but not the actual disinformation coming from your government constantly. But ya, satire is the problem. /s

This right here. The problem is the satire and not,

  1. That the satire is even plausible.
  2. That people aren't reading past the headline to the section that makes it obvious to anybody with half a brain cell to spare that this is satire.

The problem is that satire exists, not that an entire nation of 350,000,000 people or so are so badly educated they can't spot the obvious signs of it.

Yeah. Boycott US. Even without the Nazis.

The satire bit is the bit about the schools.

But seriously, you've been going off on comments that don't even care about the school part as if they've been fooled when all they might have done is just assume this was just a repost of news reported throughout multiple papers. If I didn't know better, it's almost like you were trying to dismiss what he said by portraying something very similar but with a "gotcha" that was satire, when the reality is that it is so close to reality it hardly classifies as such. Specially given how "obvious" you claim it is when this administration has not done anything if break the norms of expectation - it is missing one overlap with a school shooting from him actually saying something like this.

No, I definitely think the disinformation from my government is disinformation. I also don't think satire is misinformation - but I do think that people mistaking satire for true news creates misinformation in the minds of those mistaken people. I mean, they quite literally believe in information that is not true. If that's not being misinformed, what is?

I'm not even blaming the satire agency, I think satire is great. It's not The Beaverton's fault that this was posted somewhere where people would take it seriously. Its the fault of the OP, and the fault of the commenters for not reading the article or fact-checking things. But that doesn't change the fact that anyone who thinks this is real news is by definition misinformed, and the presence of this post in the context of this community is by definition creating misinformation.

I don't even know why you assumed I don't think the government disinformation is disinformation?

Yeah, it was only a few years ago that I realized thebeaverton was a satire website. It used to be on reddit where it's it was on atetheonion but for communities that are not explicitly labelled i think it's a good idea to help people out a bit.

[–] ZDL@lazysoci.al 1 points 10 hours ago

I did. Also it's pretty fucking obvious if you read past the headline, even in just the quoted snippet.
