You could argue valve takes advantage of indie developers with their 30% fee. But you can also argue their games would likely never even be heard of if they dont put them on steam. Steam is more than a distribution service. Its a marketing service.
Steam also does things like distributing the game to players, keeping copies of it available, and paying for the network bandwidth for terabytes of data to be downloaded every single day.
I honestly do not get the hate against steam. 30% is a very reasonable cut of the profits in exchange for the service.
Steam is running a casino targeted at children and people with the mind of a child. This is kind of the only truly evil thing they do, but that's an undeniably evil thing to do.
