No, no, no - deduct food, housing, heat, etc costs, tax too. And ofc add inflation to those costs of living.

Yeah, it won't count for me unless he has that much money in his savings account, and of course hell pays negative interest.

Doing the math with the salary of a major league sports player is also crazy to think about.

Earning the 2024 MLB average salary of 4.66 million USD per year, it’s 39,848 years. Before taxes and living expenses.

There’s simply no way he’s contributed that much value to society.

Same with all the billionaires including the Steam guy - if I believed in revenge rather than minimising suffering.

Does Valve employ people at minimum wage? I've only heard good things about how much Valve employees make.

You know what was the original point right? About how Amazon makes its money off the backs of others being unfairly paid low wages.

And for arguments sake.... I agree billionaires shouldn't exist, and that any successful enterprise in a capitalist system is built on the exploitation of unfair wage distribution somewhere down the line (Steams could be it's hard 30% fee); but I don't think either of those were the implied point of the original post.

You could argue valve takes advantage of indie developers with their 30% fee. But you can also argue their games would likely never even be heard of if they dont put them on steam. Steam is more than a distribution service. Its a marketing service.

Steam also does things like distributing the game to players, keeping copies of it available, and paying for the network bandwidth for terabytes of data to be downloaded every single day.

I honestly do not get the hate against steam. 30% is a very reasonable cut of the profits in exchange for the service.

Steam is running a casino targeted at children and people with the mind of a child. This is kind of the only truly evil thing they do, but that's an undeniably evil thing to do.

It would take even longer if it was Texas or Utah

[–] zammy95@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Yeah for real, that nine dollars an hour is a dollar and seventy five cents more than my states minimum.

And the moment he finishes, he gets critically injured and has to spend all his money for surgery that is scheduled a year and a half away while he continues to work to eat with his broken fucked up body

[–] J92@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

It won't take as long as that. Hell's minimum wage isn't that bad.

[–] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 month ago

That's only like a couple of weeks when compared to eternity. We should at least add tar and feathers. Also, for those in the know, a pineapple.

There's a silver lining: He can pee in used water bottles to shave off some time.

[–] freshcow@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Turns out it's 3 times that long if you work 8 hour days instead of 24 hour days. We'll let him work through the weekends though.

I’ll quietly leave a recommendation here for one of my favourite books

[–] toynbee@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Only because this thread is what it is, YSK that Amazon owns Goodreads. I can never actually remember the ethical alternatives, but DDG recommends several, including the one with my favorite name of the bunch:

Fair. Thanks for the headsup. Will look into the alternatives.
