I have a friend who's lived in the US for 30-odd years. Married, has a business and I believe has a green card. He's visiting the UK this year and I am seriously wondering if they'll let him back in when he returns.

I work with people in similar conditions circumstances and they are choosing not to travel out of the country at the moment as they don’t know if they will be able to reenter. That’s bold of you’re friend to assume the can get back in. Personally, I would stay in the UK if that were an option for me but it’s tough when people build a full life somewhere.
