They knifed Ley because of their abominable polls.

However, they also have a huge problem with diversity.

She never really had them behind her though. Even from the start, it was called out that she was dead (wo)man after the horrific results (for liberals) from the last federal election

My feeling from her appointment to her resignation, is that they wanted her to lead the party during the turmoil that followed the last election.

It ticks a lot of boxes for them. Hand her this poison chalice where they knew she would have to navigate a lot of difficult challenges. Then at some time prior to the next election (like now) they can replace her with a man, who doesn't have any of that baggage from the last year.
