Here's an actual answer to disable them on Android (not sure if it's different on iPhone):

The bottom one disables status notifications. The top one gives notifications if there's a burst of activity on a server you're in.

I feel ya on that one. I was getting pissed off at the server notifications sometime last year, so I knew where to look.
