Discord has begun requiring some users in the United Kingdom and Australia to verify their age through a facial scan before being permitted to access sensitive content. The chat app’s new process has been described as an “experiment,” and comes in response to laws passed in those countries that place guardrails on youth access to online platforms. Discord has also been the target of concerns that it does not sufficiently protect minors from sexual content.

Wondering if anyone knows good alternatives to Discord's screen sharing feature (good quality, good framerate, low latency, and sound support).

Preferably FOSS, but at this point I'm taking all answers. Feel free to redirect me if there's any other community I should ask this in.

This method requires use of the Vencord add-on.

  • In Discord user settings under Vencord, find the Plugins tab.

  • Search for the 'Experiments' plugin, enable and restart discord when prompted.

  • When Discord restarts you should find a new Experiments tab under Developer Only.

  • In the the Experiments tab to search for 'Desktop Visual Refresh', Select it and in the Bucket Override drop down menu set it to Not Eligible.

This will revert you back to the former desktop layout and might fix issues experienced while using Vencord Themes. It fixed it on my end while using DTM-08 but I've heard others say their themes are still broken.

Also no telling how long this will keep working for and Discord will probably disable this workaround in a future update.

At least you can hide them, for now. Another notch on the "enshittification" scale.

TL;DR: Discord launched its Social SDK, enabling game devs to integrate social features like voice, video, and text chat directly into games. This aims to enhance in-game social experiences and make it easier for players to connect and communicate without leaving the game. The SDK is designed to be developer-friendly, is free to use and supports cross-platform functionality. You can also use it as a player without needing an account, but linking your Discord account will give you more functionality.

I've been exploring alternatives to Discord and came across Matrix clients, Guilded, and Revolt.

The Matrix protocol is open-source, decentralized, federated, and can be self-hosted. However, Matrix clients seem to struggle on mobile; my friends often complain about how slow and buggy the Element client is. As for other Matrix clients, they don't seem to like the interface either.

Guilded, unfortunately, lost its charm when Roblox acquired it.

Revolt is open-source and doesn't have paid features like Discord, or so I've heard. But is that the only thing that sets it apart?

Have tested this myself - you need to still give permission to the app to be connected to your account if you haven't used them, but other than that, it works out of the box.

If you don't like this, your best option would probably be to move to https://revolt.chat/

Discord’s Wellbeing & Empowerment team is working with Dr. Rachel Kowert, an internationally acclaimed expert in mental health, trust, and safety in digital games, to develop a resource to educate and equip moderators with strategies and tools to support their mental health and promote the well-being of their online communities. Moderators and community managers play an essential role in maintaining safe and positive spaces in gaming and digital communities, and we can’t create this resource without hearing directly from those we aim to support!

Basically, they are asking for input from moderators and admins who moderate to help shape development of moderator strategies and tools on Discord.

I’ve never used discord but there’s a couple communities I want to browse that apparently only are in discord. The official app seems like shit privacy wise so I don’t want to install it. What alternatives are recommended? Or some work around?

Hello, everyone! Lily is back with another important update to share! Today, we’re diving into an issue that continues to plague Discord—servers using dishonest methods to grow and exploit users. This is something we all need to be aware of, as it can affect both individuals and communities on the platform.

A particular method, known as "Invite Rewards," has been used by many problematic servers. If you’re not familiar with it, Nicholas actually covered this tactic in a previous post, so you might want to check that out for more details. In essence, these servers promise rewards to users in exchange for inviting others to join. However, the rewards they offer are often misleading or entirely fake.

One server we investigated uses Invite Rewards to falsely promote itself by offering things like fake Nitro subscriptions, free Robux, bot-generated members (literally fake accounts), and other similar schemes. These tactics not only exploit unsuspecting users but also inflate the server’s perceived popularity through artificial means.

During our investigation, we also uncovered another server that was using Fortnite-related rewards to lure people in. They promised free bundles, V-Bucks, and other in-game perks. Of course, these rewards were either fake or designed to scam users out of their personal information. To address this, Nicholas took swift action and banned that server from interacting with us entirely.

Sadly, this issue is far from isolated. There are still countless servers on Discord employing similar dishonest tactics. While we’ve taken steps to protect our community, we’re hopeful that Discord itself will crack down on these servers, banning or removing them to create a safer and more trustworthy environment for everyone.

For now, stay vigilant and cautious when you come across servers offering deals that seem too good to be true. If you see something suspicious, don’t hesitate to report it. Together, we can help make Discord a better place for all!

I got these half square half round icons since today on my Discord. Is this a new thing ? Is this something existing that I accidentally turned on ?

If I am required to do this, I am purging my Discord account immediately. I am not giving them face scans.

I know some folks that chronically don't reply but react with emoji, so at least I'll get a notification now.

I can also see this becoming really annoying if you announce something in a large community and you get notified.

NOTE: Reaction notifications are currently an experimental feature limited to a select number of desktop and mobile users.

Hello Lemmy. Discord locked me out of my account and wants me to verify using my phone number. Issue being, I gave them this phone number over 4 years ago and I took it off of my account at least 2 years ago and never added a 2nd. The reason I can't verify that number is because it was a burner phone. What do I do, or am I completely fucked?

Wayland and audio is fixed, but only on the canary branch for the moment, this isnt lazy either, they changed the whole screenshare flow to suit linux's permission prompts

I own an LGS and use discord to connect with customers. I have the server broken down into sections, like board games, card games, miniature games, etc so that someone there only for board games does not get all of the chatter of mini gaming. When you first join you only see the announcement channel, the welcome channel, and the channel selection channel. When you arrive the welcome bot prompts you to visit the channel selection channel and pick your interests.

I have a large number of users who have never selected interests. I would like to either tag them all so that I can reminder them to update preferences, or maybe have everyone that joins automatically get a role that is removed when they receive any other role making tagging easier.

If anyone has any insight on easily doing one or the other, or a better way to get people to pick their roles I would love to hear it.

A while ago I've noticed Discord using 8-10% of my CPU every time I open Task Manager. This doesn't really sound weird... Until you realize this is when my Discord client is NOT running (AKA after I fully exit out of it so it's not even present in the tray area on the right side of the taskbar). From what I can tell, it's using about 400MB of memory, no disk or network and about 8% of CPU (I have 6 cores/12 threads and that 8-10% seems to be distributed among all of them). It's possible it uses disk and network in short bursts after a long period of inactivity, but I havent spotted it doing that so far). If I were to kill Discord.exe in the task manager - it would go away and not come back until I restarted my computer. At first, I didn't think much of it - I thought maybe it's doing some background update or something, but it is constant, it doesn't go away unless I kill it. When I run Discord - another Discord entry appears in the task manager - the suspicious one seems unaffected. Both entries take me to the same file when I click "Open file location". The file seems normal and signed by Discord. What is going on here? Do you guys also have this going on or is it just me? I'm getting some really sus vibes ngl. I suspect a discord bug/unoptimized code, 3rd party malware or Discord itself secretly doing some malicious thing.

UPDATE: Multiple clean reinstalls haven't helped.

They supposedly can be disabled in settings- but we all know that won't last. They're going full Microsoft Skype mode and it's only a matter of time.

Forced arbitration means any legal disputes you may have with Discord must be resolved through a single third party mediator, who 99% of the time is chosen by, and will rule in favor of, the corporation/Discord. This effectively removes all your legal rights as a consumer, because arbitration decisions are legally binding and non-appealable.

The new ToS goes into effect April 15th, 2024.

YOU CAN OPT OUT OF ARBITRATION. You must email arbitration-opt-out@discord.com BEFORE MAY 15TH (30 days after ToS effective date) with your username stating that you wish to opt out of the arbitration clause. Once May 15th passes you are bound to arbitration with Discord forever.

Opt-out before it's too late.

  3. Slater is facing charges for unauthorized disclosure of National Defense information and conspiracy to disclose National Defense information.
  4. Former Air Guard Jack Tesera pleaded guilty to leaking documents from the Pentagon and received a sentence of up to 16 years in prison.
  5. Tesera will also be required to turn over classified documents, pay a fine, and have supervised release.
  6. The discussion raises questions about whether Tesera could be considered a whistleblower for revealing information about American involvement in Ukraine.
  7. The video also touches on the perception of Tesera leaking information to friends on Discord rather than to the press for public interest.
  8. The complexity of these cases and the consequences faced by individuals leaking classified information are highlighted in the discussion.
  9. The speaker discusses two separate stories involving individuals who compromised classified information.
  10. The vulnerability of individuals to deception and manipulation is reflected upon, emphasizing the importance of being cautious and skeptical of suspicious communications.
