I was 18 ish in the late 80s, I saw him on David Letterman. I thought he was a stupid piece of shit, for 30 years I have seen people either talk about how great he is (though it always seemed like the people saying he was great were making fun of him) or about how he scammed people. And every time I think "how fucking stupid can people be"
I'm about the same age and very vaguely remember being aware of him in the late 70s. I assume my "let me pull apart distressed companies for profit" father had something of his that was just so glaringly awful to look at.
By the time he was pushing into the greater media bubble, it was painfully obvious he was the worst kind of gold plated clown.
Monumentally, apparently.
