was leafing through a copy of the rough guide to cult films i picked up in a charity shop earlier today, its like one of those dime a dozen books written by some snarky opinionated film buff reccomending films he likes amd trashing ones he thinks suck with a vague pretence at objectivity amd ngl i think this is how all film discussion should be handled,online film discourse has gotten way too letterboxdified and now the prince charles inema basically only does reruns of the first quarter of the letterboxd top 250 narrative films list.

everyones got way too far up their own asses about this shit, we need to retvrn to the video store spiritually and get a beer, go on tubi and watch some dumb italian bullshit where a load of guys get shot and lose a bathtub of blood each and the title sounds like the name of the average 14 year olds first doom wad

Agreed. I have a few friends like these who stick their noses up at almost everything.

I fully understand wanting to analyse a movie and forming a slightly more sophisticated opinion on it.

But at some point:

-Do they realise the amount of work that goes into these things? Most movies that aren’t ai slop are a small miracle on their own if you take every single element into account.

-“they should have…” stfu, they didn’t because it’s their movie. And more often than not these kind of throw away lines they imagine being better probably have passed the writing table multiple times. And they probably didn’t make it for good reason. There’s logistics, copyrights, flow of the story, screen time,… you name it.

-“they really shouldn’t have cast so n so.” It’s not just matching a face to a character. They gotta be able to bring it naturally and convincingly, be available, be willing,…

-You gotta wonder if people actually let themselves enjoy a movie in that mindset?

tbh as a big movie nerd half the fun of the film is debating the film afterwards with other movie nerds, like trashing bad bits and having strong opinions about the film just for the fun of arguing over them. It's usually not meant super seriously except online bcs everyone in online film discourse is autistic and doesnt get that nuance but replicate the arguments anyway.
