Hey all, feel free to delete if sharing YT videos isn't permitted, but I made a video on the Fediverse last week and specifically talking about Mastodon, Lemmy, Pixelfed, and Peertube.

Just thought I'd share in case anyone wanders by and wants an overview.

I i think it's great that you're spreading the word about the fediverse and helping get people off of big data.

You might consider using a youtube alternative for your channel, perhaps a PeerTube instance.

I tried PeerTube and, unfortunately, found it terribly underwhelming. But thank you for the suggestion.

PeerTube is pretty underwhelming for now...but since you already have the content, it'd be easy for you to start posting there. The more people who post there, the less underwhelming it will be.

I didn't watch so maybe you did namedrop, but it's not just Lemmy anymore - it's Piefed and Mbin too! (I saw you had a "Lemmy" category)

[–] FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I only mentioned 'Lemmy' in the video, but did include a link to a Lemmy instance database, so I presume those options are included.

[–] Skavau@piefed.social 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

No. Piefed and Mbin are separate software that reads Lemmy instances, but are not Lemmy instances.

Go to piefed.social and you'll see or fedia.io for mbin.

Ah, thank you for the info.

Have you thought about mirroring your youtube content to peertube? You can join an instance, set up mirroring, and let it be. No extra work.

P.S why did you find it underwhelming?

I'll consider doing that.

Why did you find it underwhelming?

There's a chapter on that in the video. :D But I was just vastly unimpressed with the quality of content and the UI. It's not a viable YouTube alternative at this point, IMHO.

[–] meldrik@lemmy.wtf 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

What didn't you like about the UI and which PeerTube instance did you use?

Edit: I see in your video that you are visiting a PeerTube instance with a very old version of PeerTube. Try something like: https://spectra.video/

[–] atro_city@fedia.io 3 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I'll consider doing that.

❤️

I did see that part, but I thought there was more to it. What would it need to become a viable youtube alternative?

[–] frischkaesbagett@feddit.org 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I think finding other peertube Videos on other instances is really hard. I use a searchengine and then copy paste channels in my app which is not rellt userfriendliy IMO.

bTW: I am absolutely thankful for the work being put into peertube! I try to use it as much as possible but YouTube is still sadly my goto.

[–] atro_city@fedia.io 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I have given up on accessing youtube, peertube, odyssey, dailymotion, and whatever else in the browser. Now it's exclusively GrayJay because I can't be bothered to search for videos on different platforms, create accounts on multiple platforms, subscribe to creators on multiple platforms and then check each feed individually. GrayJay just united them all for me.

But I see your point. For being supposedly federated, I don't get why peertube requires pasting links into the search bar. Why can't I find them with, you know, the search? It's baffling. They had to invent https://sepiasearch.org/ for searching across all instances it seems, but it still requires pasting the link into the searchbar of your instance.

🤯

Sepiasearch finding 100+ Videos for the search string "kdenlive"

Why is sepia not integrated in the app?

My account at the appsearch not finding one video for the search string "kdenlive"

What would it need to become a viable youtube alternative?

Good question. I was only on it for about 30 minutes, so I don't really have extensive feedback other than it felt very low quality and too basic.

Are there any well-populated instances you would recommend? I could be convinced to give it another try.

[–] atro_city@fedia.io 3 points 1 day ago

It does look like old youtube mix with some parts of newer youtube, I'll give you that. To me, that's what I like about it. It's pretty much low-bullshit, but my eye is not for design.

Unfortunately, I don't browse through instance homepages anymore but through the GrayJay app, so my feed is a mix of videos from about 10 different video platforms and at least 3 peertube instances.

If you want to find instances, Join Peertube allows sorting by number of local videos and number of total videos. Dalek.zone, Makers.tube, and peertube.wtf seem like the most active or have the most users and the most videos.

The best place for people with no knowledge of the fediverse to learn about it, is on the platforms they use now.

I i think it's great that you're spreading the word about the fediverse and helping get people off

Say no more.
