yo I don't like the UK either and their general traditions and cultures but.. I respect brits. While this one in particular is not that heavy-handed, what's up with all the racism against brits lately in this (and other memes) sub?

[-] yetAnotherUser@feddit.de 34 points 9 months ago

Br*tish isn't a race, it's a nationality.

And despising people who happen to live in another country closeby has been one of the most popular European pastimes for millenia.

[-] vankappa@lemmy.world 6 points 9 months ago

yeah maybe that's normal for racists

[-] yetAnotherUser@feddit.de 13 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

It's not racist if you hate everyone regardless of ethnicity with that nationality ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Br*tish isn't a race, it's a nationality

"It's not racism, it's just sparkling xenophobia"?

[-] SuperCub@sh.itjust.works 1 points 9 months ago

I don't think you know what that word means?

[-] Kusimulkku@lemm.ee 1 points 9 months ago

Xenophobia or racism?

I guess it's just that they've fucked most nations on Earth at some point of time. I've generally noticed that "racism" against former colonizers like the English, French and citizens of currently powerful countries like Americans is accepted.

[-] vankappa@lemmy.world 8 points 9 months ago

I agree that English colonialism was awful. But I'm pretty sure that not all English folk cared about colonisation of other, "underdeveloped" countries. I'm pretty sure most English folk were just trying to survive while their English lords and oligarchs were stealing their food

some of my students are the kids of the significant Indian population in my area, and every so often the subject of England will come up in a lesson. those kids have some harsh words for the english. most of them have living relatives who remember the 40s famines there.

and yes, shit talking people who have societal power is generally more okay than doing the same with people who don't have societal power. "racism" against white americans is way more toothless than racism against, say, black americans.

As a lifelong resident of the UK you really shouldn't. We've really not covered ourselves in glory over the last decade or so.

Ha, brexitier points finger

It's not racism... Friendly countries have always been picking on each others. Like Finnish are picking on Swedish, Norwegians are picking on Swedish or Danish are picking on Swedish.

[-] Mr_Blott@lemmy.world 5 points 9 months ago

I always explain it's like Americans when someone from New York makes a joke about someone from Kentucky, or California. Except we do it with neighbouring countries. And we don't need a laugh track. And we don't have to wait for the adverts to finish

[-] hemko@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 9 months ago

Wouldn't that be racism against Kentuckians and Californians? /s

[-] Mr_Blott@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago

Some yank would find a reason to be offended, yes
