Over the past week or two, I've been discussing merging this community with c/world. The intents and purposes of both of these communities are essentially the same, and we don't really see a reason to divide that community rather than just put it all under one roof.

We're open to any and all opinions on this, and nothing is set in stone so please feel free to reply candidly.

Please speak up especially if you feel like:

  1. You wouldn't like this for really any reason

  2. You feel this community already serves a different purpose

  3. You feel this community could serve a different purpose, and include what changes you'd like to see to meet that goal.

I work with the head mod of c/world, @YoBuckStopsHere@lemmy.world, on c/NFL and talk to him regularly, we're both pretty much on the same page about everything and moderate communities in a similar manner, so if your only reservation would be possible stricter or different moderation, I hope that alleviates some of the concern. All of the mods from here would also be welcome to join over there if we do merge.

What do you mean by a merge?

If you're considering locking this community down and turning it into a permanent redirect to c/world, please don't. You would essentially be parking this community name for no good purpose.

That's fair, but do you really feel there needs to be two co-existing communities for the same thing with less than 5k people in this one?

I think they serve two different purposes. "World news" is literally event by event news, "world" can be more discussion-oriented (edit: well, except that they... only allow news articles, geez).

I just posted an op-ed in /c/worldnews a minute ago thinking "huh this would fit better if there were a /c/world, this isn't exactly news so much as analysis" (then just now seeing this post). If we learned one thing from reddit it's not to centralize control over communities.

Gotcha, yeah, many people seem on board with a merge, but given that some people aren't and it's not particularly close to unanimous I don't think we will be doing it. Thanks for the feedback!

You or me perhaps not, but someone else might. Since you appear to want to join the team of c/world, I see no reason to not leave this community open for someone else to take over.

Multiple communities can exist, especially for a subject like world news.

I mean, I'm not leaning more one way than the other, it just seemed like a reasonable proposal to put it all under one roof. I consulted the community for a reason, it isn't just my opinion that matters regardless. Thank you for the input.
