It doesnt. Neither does silver, unless they are fake/alloys. It's a metaphor about how wealth is fleeting and that material wealth is not true wealth.
Silver does still tarnish when it exposed to atmospheric sulfur though.
Yeah but it can be polished, it doesn't corrode like flesh rots or how moths eat the clothes which are the images the author is going with.
If your gold rusts away before your eyes, God is really angry with you.
