I mostly use Signal with family and friends. For all else, I have used Google messages and the default app.

I've been using Beeper. It's open source and built on Matrix bridges, also open source. For RCS you have to link it to your Google Messages

He wanted FOSS software. Bridging it to Matrix doesn't make it FOSS imo.

Synapse is AGPL-3.0.

Quick question about Beeper:
Does the app explain how these bridges work, what that means for encryption, and most importantly, that it would be nice to inform your contacts about it?
