I've deleted my comments and posts and find Reddit then restored them a few hours later.
So I've written some Python to delete them automatically and have it run on a schedule. Fuck 'em. A week later and Reddit are still restoring my data for the script to delete.
I think i'll nuke mine after the AMA. Just one more hour!

I just found one thing that Lemmy in browser does that Reddit doesn't do on the desktop. Your comment just pushed to the bottom of the thread I was writing a reply to. That was cool.
That is cool, but I think that's going to stop working. The devs are removing the feature that relies on because it's not efficient. Trying to keep everything smooth while there's a large increase in traffic
Fair enough. I was just surprised it popped up there, Im used to having to refresh the page to see new Reddit comments.
I did today. My account was about 5.5 years old and I have to admit it was somewhat hard at the beginning. But to be honest I already don’t care anymore.
That API stuff was a huge shitshow that made me really angry. I even would have paid a subscription to be able to keep using Apollo. But if Reddit decides to bring people out of business they are not going to do business with me either.
I'm selling mine, apparently it's 50.000? Right?
I'm waiting to see what happens; they've announced the API screw-over of the 3rd party apps, but if the protests on the 12th+ blackout the site (you can't bill advertisers if there ain't no eyeballs) there might be some concession.
Look, Reddit hasn't been profitable - yet. The VCs who dumped in 1.3Bn bucks want it back, and I don't begrudge anyone for trying to make their own ham sandwich; we all gotta eat. My opinion is that the popular 3rd party app developers and API users should have been consulted and involved in the decision-making. And face it: apart from what we've paid to our favourite app developers we've received an awesome internet community for zero cost for over a decade (some of us anyway)!
How hard is it to go to the Apollo guy or the RiF folks and say: hey. we appreciate you making awesome apps. We need to start earning money. But you too need to make money. How can we work together, to maybe put a few more ads, or ad revenue generating "premium" features without screwing each other over, or our users?
So Ill wait to see what happens in the coming week and ride Reddit-is-Fun out to the bitter end and the lights go out and then probably delete my Reddit account then. But I've made the first steps. Im here ain't I?

Im eager to see what form it comes in. If my posts and comments come with some context around them then Im fine with just deleting my account. I hope the links are permalinks so the backreferences to REddit stay intact (AND, you don't need the API to access, you could essentially "scrape" the context of your posts). I've been trying to find a way to search my own comments and posts for years (there are tools, but I want an OFFLINE archive of my stuff - I frequently find myself replying to someone and going hey wait Ive already answered this, now where did I put that comment...
iamthatis (Apollo) even said he could do it with a bit more time after the initial shock, some negotiation etc, he was willing to try if Reddit would throw him anything at all so it was possible. But Reddit instead shut down all communication then lied about what happened
Yeah, I like how they tried to throw him under the bus. Terrible that, Canada being single party consent states/provinces for recording phone conversations.

I’ve deleted all my content (by hand—there wasn’t much), and I plan to delete my account on June 30 before Apollo stops working.
My plan is to unsub from subreddits as I find comparable communities here until eventually there is nothing left in my feed to keep me at Reddit.
I already deleted all my comments and posts and when the time comes and RIF is down I'll delete my whole account.
I've put all my saved posts and comments in a notes file in preparation and have deleted an alt account. But I think I might keep my main a bit until my most niche subs have transferred (if they'll transfer at all). Once Apollo stops working I'll no longer be going to reddit on my phone in any case.
Annoyingly, even thought I don't want to support Reddit. There is still going to be some useful things on Reddit, but I really hope most the community move over to here, or somewhere else.
You can still browse anonymously! Or at the very least just not post/comment on reddit

be aware, you need to use a tool to wipe your content before deleting the account, otherwise all the posts will be up again
No, but I'm migrating most of my usage here. Some small subreddits will probably never be replicated here and I like talking about smaller games and bands sometimes.

That's where I'm at. I think I like this place more than tildes from what I've seen.
There's still a few niche things that warrant keeping my account and using old.reddit for the time being. Mainly, I get most of my local city news from the local sub - I don't think Lemmy will ever be able to replace that

Deleted yesterday right after the post from Christian detailing the scummy way in which Reddit was treating him.
Not yet. I'm waiting to watch it all fall apart. Definitely going to suck losing out on so many communities. But I'm no longer interested in the direction its going and have been using boost for a decade to browse. I rarely use reddit on desktop and refuse to use their bloated app. It's strayed so far from its original design philosophy that deleting it probably won't hurt all that much.
Not yet. I want to watch and participate in the absolute chaos happening. It's a train wreck, great entertainment.
But as soon as the API key is revoked I'm gone. Well I already spend more time here.

I haven't yet. I imagine it'll be like how I handled Twitter... slowly going there less and less as the fediverse got more and more compelling. Now my Twitter account is abandoned.

I haven’t yet. I’ll probably keep using Reddit until June 30th besides maybe the protest days next week. I’m not sure if I’ll delete my accounts after June 30th or not though in case I need them for a one-off use case in the future.
I will say that it’d be easier to delete my accounts now than a couple years ago. A couple years ago, I was trying to make sure I never lost access to my original Reddit account by changing my password to be more secure, but my password manager failed to save the new password. I got locked out of my original nearly 10 year old Reddit account with a bit of a rare username. The only reason I have access to it now is it’s still logged in through Apollo, but I guess I’ll lose it forever on June 30th. I guess it doesn’t matter if I’m trying to move here anyways.
Just did it yesterday after realizing that the only real use Reddit got was bookmarking funny cats and doom scrolling. Twitter is next, just gotta save some "useful media" first
Whenever I saved the "useful" stuff of something, I later realized I never looked at it again or even if I did it wasn't all that important. The monkey brain just likes to hoard.

I'll have no choice but to delete RIF after it shuts down, so I'll probably make the tough decision after that.

Purged everything this morning bar for one last comment on the Apollo thread. Currently using kbin.social - exploring my options, but I wont be returning to Reddit.
My plan is to drop and delete Reddit on June 30th.
What I have not figured out yet, is where to post my goodbye. Any ideas?
Not quite, but I also don’t really want to go back to reddit. I’m seeing some great alternatives on the rise, so I can sense I’ll be deleting the profile at some point. Just haven’t pulled that trigger yet.

I have deleted Apollo off of my phone, but I plan to still use the few tiny sub reddit communities that I enjoy. However, I am actively avoiding r/all and major subs that are just meme factories.
Doubt Ill ever delete it, just abandon it.
