In case anybody is wondering, this is a joke ad made by Clarkson in 2009.
That episode was hilarious.
Though it was about the Scirocco Diesel
You could also read it differently nowadays 15 years later with all the emissions scandal. Probably wouldn't want to trust Volkswagen with such statements huh.
The thing is the range claims were really true, they just couldn't do it cleanly.
