The books build on each other. It would be best to read them in order.
You will absolutely not understand what's going on in #3.
That being said, the books aren't perfect sequels to each other, so don't expect exacting continuity.
Have you seen the movies? That could be a basis for reading the 3rd book, but it's been so long I don't remember any details that you would miss.
I haven't seen the movies. I'd like to read books before watching movies.

I mean, you can read anything in any order, do you boo. Those stories however are definitely “chronological” and build off of each other. So I would not only reading the last one.
