Rules:

1) Treat Others in a Civil Manner. This is not the place to deride others for their race, sexuality, or etc. Personal insults of other members are not welcome here. Neither are calls for violence.

2) No Contemporary Politics Historical politics that influenced designs or adoption of designs are excluded from this rule. Acknowledgement of existing laws to explain designs is also permissable, so long as comments aren't in made to advocate or oppose a policy. Let's not make this a place where we battle over which color ties our politicians should have, or the issues of today.

3) No Advertising This rule doesn't apply to posting historical advertisements or showing more contemporary ads as a means of displaying information on an appropriate topic. The aim of this rule is to combat spam/irrelevant advertising campaigns.

4) Keep Post on Topic This rule will be enforced with leeway. Just keep it related to arms or Forgotten Weapons or closely adjacent content. If you feel you have something that's worth posting here that isn't about either of those (and doesn't violate other rules) feel free to reach out to a mod.

5) No NSFW Content Please refrain from posting uncensored extreme gore or sexualized content. If censored these posts may be fine.

Post Guide Lines

These are suggestions not rules.

-Provide a duration for videos. eg. [12:34]

-Provide a year to either indicate when a specific design was produced, patented, or released. If you have an older design being used in a recent conflict provide the year the picture was taken. Dates should be included to help contextualize, not necessarily give exact periods.

-Post a full URL, on mobile devices it can be hard to tell what you're clicking on if you only see "(Link)".

-Posts do not have to be just firearms. Blades, bows, etc. are also welcome.

...the most powerful production revolver in the world anyway, and that’s just according to the manufacturer. For whatever reason, Russian designers took to creating a revolver to fire their 12.7x55mm cartridge (speculated to be a cut-down .338 Lapua case...), it has been suggested for the purpose of destroying locks and other objects.

Looks like the barrel is positioned at the bottom of the cylinder. IIRC, an Italian brand was the first to try this and claimed that it did a better job of driving the recoil into the hand and arm instead of over the wrist as with a traditional revolver configuration. Idk how much of it is bro science, but it seems truthy.

Holding a firearm is like holding a lever from a physics pov. It takes less force if you apply it higher up to let the muzzle climb. A low bore axis handgun doesn't eliminate the force but sends it into the shooter rather than using it to flip the muzzle. Keeping your sights on your target.

Physicists feel free to correct me if I screwed this up. Think it'd be a class 3.

Yep! Chiappa Rhino. They seem to be high quality and well loved.

Did the Mateba not come first?

E: thanks Firetower. Got to work on my reading comprehension. Additionally, the Chiappa Rhino is a pleasure to shoot and significantly more comfortable compared to a similar high-bore axis pistol. I have a pistol in .38 special that is about the same comfort as another in .44 magnum due to the difference in bore axis.

I think Mateba is the Italian company he's referencing.

Developed by Mateba, based in Pavia, Italy. Inventor Emilio Ghisoni, who was also famous for later designing the Chiappa Rhino

Ah. I'm not sure what I was thinking. Thank you.

I hadn't realized the designer had passed away. ):

[–] FireTower@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You might have gotten confused because Mateba expanded into having a US division too.

[–] LowtierComputer@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Na I'd just not read it correctly.

A true “hand cannon”, to make a Destiny reference. I never knew low-bore handguns could/would be a thing and always thought that was sci-fi magic in video game guns that didnt have to make sense. Destiny had a lot of low-bore hand guns…guess the devs werent that crazy!

[–] ThatWeirdGuy1001@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

It's actually funny you say that it seemed like a sci-fi fantasy thing. Mainly because people have tried to develop mainstream low bore pistols for a long time.

The idea is that the more inline the barrel is to the center of the hand the less recoil impacts accuracy.

Recoil only pulls the barrel up because the barrel is above the centerline of the hand creating a lever that pulls the hand up.

An inline barrel would push all that recoil straight back into the hand causing minimal rising with repeated firing.

There's a few of them like the Chiappa Rhino or the Matebas but it's definitely not the standard.

[–] Beefytootz@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Fun fact, mateba turned into chiappa. Same guy behind the Unica 6 made the rhino

[–] Wodge@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

I have a very cursed version of this in the ol' CoD MW3.

I'm fairly certain this is the inspiration behind the Tyr handgun in modern warfare 3. The second picture is almost exactly the same as a pre-made build for the Tyr in game

[–] magikmw@lemm.ee 5 points 1 year ago

I know this is about real handguns, but since this one is fairly rare outside of Russia, you can shoot it in Escape from Tarkov, along the rifle in the samw caliber.

[–] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 5 points 1 year ago

Lol this is both the coolest but also the silliest thing I've seen here so far. I want a goddamn revolver rifle!

[–] Unforeseen@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Reminds me of that hand cannon that Killa had in John wick 4

[–] FireTower@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I looked it up the film gun is a Smith & Smith & Wesson Model 500. Pretty much an American made equivalent.
