MODERATORS

There have been a few posts featuring an alt text, which are text descriptions of the image for people with visual impairments.
I've just wanted to post an image, lost my description due to a bug (?) in the app I'm using and wonder:
Is there even anybody here who finds use in this?
Obviously this might change if there enough alt texts, but it helps me to judge how much energy to spend on creating them. Please upvote the comment below which indicates your position or add your own.

Useful for visually impaired users

Yeah but I doubt there currently are any users here. There certainly are none if you go by the results of this poll.

So, you mean, we should make sure that doesn't change?

I sometimes use them.

I personally have no use in alt texts.

They are certainly useful for search engines that index images, because then they get to know what is actually happening in the image, allowing people to search for it using keywords.

i add them even if no one gets use out of them because why the fuck not

wait how do you add alt text? i think i have missed it in the ui?

You add alt text in the post description, that's it. I don't think lemmy supports proper alt text like mastodon yet, so you have to use the post description.

ah so alt text is just meaning adding a transcript in the body. got it. thought i was somehow missing a dedicated field lol.

For now, maybe lemmy will implement alt text someday.

I use them on a regular basis.
