The Drew Carey Show (www.youtube.com)
submitted 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) by ptz@dubvee.org to c/90s_tv

God this show was great, even if / especially because sometimes it became a live action cartoon. Sadly, it has never been released on DVD. I don't even know if re-runs are still running.

If you preferred the opening with "5 O'Clock World" by The Vogues, I got you fam:

Edit: How could I forget about the original Moon Over Parma

If I could buy you a Buzz Beer right now I totally would.

Thank you! I've been wanting to watch this forever and have only found the first season.

When I was a teen, I used to have my VCR setup to record this and Whose Line Is It Anyway? This show is/was underrated. Great cast with generally charming chemistry.

Yep, same. Good times.

There was a dvd drop for the first season but only the first 😔 If I remember right, Drew Carry himself said that there were too many guest, pop culture references and songs which made getting the rights for dvd or streaming a nightmare.

[-] ptz@dubvee.org 4 points 4 months ago

Yep, that's all I could find except for a few compilation DVDs. And I heard the same thing about the rights. So sad a piece of cultural history can disappear just because of that.

Always wanted an outdoor pool table.

[-] ptz@dubvee.org 2 points 4 months ago

I was just thinking about that lol.

But I don't know how long/well it would hold up out in the weather.

[-] Alexstarfire@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

Pretty sure it'd get gross pretty fast and wouldn't be all that great after the first rain. Only reason to do it would be if the table was already pretty bad.

For the longest time i thought Mimi was Drew in drag because I never saw pictures of them together. Once I saw them interacting in the series I was confused for a bit.

Drew in drag

As you say, it wasn't.

The Carey who wore drag was Steve (until they dropped it in later seasons for no reason)

It's possible Drew did drag in an episode I don't recall at present, but he didn't even do drag in the Rocky Horror episode (content warning: donald trump is in that episode)

[-] ptz@dubvee.org 3 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

was Steve

And they were surprisingly progressive about it, too. I don't remember exactly how the scene went down, but I remember it being more or less something like this:

Drew: Hey, Steve, go get us some beers.
Steve: Ok. (Leaves the room, comes back in a dress, wig, full getup)
Drew: Are you wearing a dress?!
Stephanie: Yes. I'm a cross-dresser. And when I wear the dress, I prefer to be called 'Stephanie'.
Drew: Ok, Stephanie. We're still waiting on our beers.

And that was it except for a "telling the parents" episode, I believe.

I need to rewatch the series before "10-4"ing that (at the very least the fact that what should be a major part of someone's self conception was treated as a thing which could be dropped without issue or comment is troubling.)

Totally remember when Oswald got boobs though. That sort of thing plants some seeds, I tell ya. ("If you had a hand on your head we'd want to shake it.")

Drew's character also got civil union'd before anyone in his country could get gay married as I recall, but again I'll need to rewatch how that was handled prior commenting.

I do remember taking issue with some of the social structures reinforced in some of the show's humor, such as Drew looking up the definition of sexual harassment, " 'Any unwelcome sexual advance.'? that's every sexual advance I make!" I viewed that more as making light of sexual harassment than self-depreciation on Drew's part.

I don't personally care for Drew Carey—the sort of asshole who supports Ron Paul—and haven't since he told a joke in 2003, "My girlfriend's a Democrat; well... she hasn't actually come out as a Democrat but she's always bitching." despite allegedly being critical of the united states invasion of Iraq himself.

Some of the company he keeps I fuck with so heavily it's not like I'm calling on his canceling. He's just that friend you wish would be a better person (and stop voting for Garry Johnson).

I've been watching it again, I had the impression Steve stopped doing drag cause he married Mimi and whatever reasons came up from that.

Yeah, I think that might have been the implication, but they still should have addressed how first off that's a fucked thing to ask of someone and if they went that way they should have at least addressed how it was a very big deal for Steve to make that adjustment for her and not just dropped that aspect of the character in later seasons. In addition to questioning why Mimi had a problem with it.

It put out in the viewing audience how you can just request Queer people quit doing queer things and they can or should respond with "Okie!"` ^.^
