Always a momentous occasion when a father shows a son his first cone. I know I have fond memories of my first cone.

Thise are definitely tardigrades aka water bears aka space fleas

I didn't think they were because of the stringy bits of their backs. Are there different types?

Yes! And those filaments are typical for that group of tardigrades (called Echiniscoidea)
