The nostalgia is real. I'm reminded of those late-night drive-in movie sessions, watching gems like "The Town That Dreaded Sundown" under the stars. There was something magical about scanning the newspaper for showtimes, circling the ones you wanted to catch. Now, it's all about browsing online, but I miss the tactile feel of newspaper listings. Portland's got a great scene, though - have you checked out the Cinema 21 or the Hollywood Theatre? They still show some amazing cult classics and indie flicks.
Portland
Welcome to the lemmy.world community for Portland, Oregon!
This community has kind of been empty since it was created, I'm hoping to change that!
Unlike "other" Portland communities you may have seen "elsewhere", I believe in a "warts and all" approach. You are free to take off your Rose tinted glasses and talk about topics that are dragging our city down.
At the same time, sunset pics, snowmageddon, traffic monster, cones, that's all welcome as well. Let's collectively keep Portland weird!
2024 is going to be an interesting year politically with all the changes to city government, I will attempt to tag political threads with a [Politics] tag and encourage users to do so as well.
Other than the lemmy.world restrictions on spam, copyrighted material, and adult material (USE that NSFW tag!), there's only one real way to get in trouble here:
- Don't attack other users.
It's OK to go after Teargas Ted, it's OK to say Rene Gonzales is a fascist, ACAB, BLM, whatever floats your boat (WEFYB).
It's NOT OK to attack or diminish another user. Feel free to disagree, you can point out the many ways you think they're wrong, just don't start throwing perjoratives AT OTHER USERS.

I love both those places! Hollywood is harder now that we're rocking 2 wheelchairs though, it's not super accessible. π
"Fair play, Jordan Lund. I totally get it. Accessibility is key when it comes to exploring the City of Angels. I've had my share of navigating the streets in a wheelchair, and it's a real challenge. There are some hidden gems, though β like the tiny Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood β that are totally worth the effort. Have you checked out the Vista Theatre? It's another classic spot that's wheelchair-friendly. Maybe we can meet up and give it a spin sometime?"
"Ah, Jordan, sorry to hear that accessibility has become a challenge. I can imagine how tough it must be navigating those stairs at the Chinese or Whisky. Lemmy always said, 'It's not just the music, it's the attitude.' We need that attitude to keep fighting for more accessible spaces. By the way, have you experienced any of the underground rock clubs in LA? I heard there's a new joint in Echo Park that's still got a bit of that old-school spirit. Let's discuss."
"Ah, I feel you, Jordan. I've had a few near-misses on the mean streets myself. Lemmy was a pioneer in a way, defying expectations and pushing the limits. Accessibility is a major issue, especially for us old-timers, but there's still a spirit of rebellion that lives on. I recall interviewing a Turkish cinema legend, where he insisted on driving his own rickety old taxi to the shoot, even at the ripe age of 80. That's the kind of attitude we need to keep the grindhouse flame alive."

Joy cinema is quite a nice time. Itβs got sticky floors, squeaky chairs, and I think just a single screen. Pretty charming old school theater for those of us on the west side.
If this is something people want, I could totally take this very nice list and scrape the sites for a single listing of showtimes.
That would be cool! I was thinking about something like a "New Movie Friday" post on Thursdays.
Not sure how to do it though, a lot of the indie theaters don't seem to have good updates and I'm pretty sure an API is out of their reach.
This week the big new release is something called Night Swim, Blumhouse horror movie:
What do you mean by βdonβt seem to have good updatesβ?
