There is one thing for uber wealthy people to act poor but I dont care if a wealthy person finds happiness in a frugal lifestyle. Sharing in cultures is vital to the human experience.

[-] BruceTwarzen@kbin.social 40 points 6 months ago

The crazy thing is that i i were filthy rich, the only thing that would change is that i wouldn't go to work anymore, and i'd probably invest in some sort of farm/weekly market where you can buy actually fresh and cheap veggies and things like that and i wouldn't have to care if it makes money. So i totally get that aspect of it. But pretending to be a complete hippie and selling that lifestyle while you're clearly not, just seems weird

[-] ThirdWorldOrder@feddit.nl 32 points 6 months ago

Not trying to be a contrarian but a lot of hippies were from rich backgrounds which is why they didn’t have to work to begin with.

[-] Arsecroft 14 points 6 months ago

See if there are any Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) orgs in your area, I used to go pick up a big box of produce every week at the farm where they grew them, was cool

[-] Crazyslinkz@lemmy.world 3 points 6 months ago

Farmers markets, there usually held on weekends around here, get fresh fruit and vegetables from local growers.

[-] GBU_28@lemm.ee 10 points 6 months ago

I don't think they needed to be educated on what a farmer's market is.

They are saying they'd stand a new one up

[-] WamGams@lemmy.ca 4 points 6 months ago

Where I am at least, the veggies can also be double to triple the price of the grocery store.

[-] Son_of_dad@lemmy.world 8 points 6 months ago

There's this weird in between that many sister in law lives in. She buys everything at thrift stores but it's those trendy super expensive thrift stores lol

[-] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 11 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

trendy super expensive thrift stores

This truly is the darkest timeline. Definitely the stupidest 🤦

[-] I_Fart_Glitter@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago

Buffalo Exchange and similar stores like that are between thrift stores and consignment stores, they purchase their products either from customers for store credit or cherry pick at real thrift stores then mark it up to sell at the trendy store. Everything there has to meet a specific aesthetic.

I don't disagree with your sentiment taken in a vacuum, but gentrification (of housing and activities in general) is 100% a real thing and is almost always due to rich people trying to live a "frugal lifestyle." Idk man, shit just sucks all around

[-] Squizzy@lemmy.world 9 points 6 months ago

Yeah, I get that but the complaint that these people with wealthy parents get to focus on art and lifestyle is a failure of the system not the person.

We should all be able to do that but only the wealthy can, so spread the wealth yeah but dont hate on arts and independent thought, trying new things and seeking an environment you enjoy.

[-] TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world 3 points 6 months ago

? in my expereince it's just people with some money trying to find a affordable place to live... and it gets nicer, so richer people are interested in it... and so on and so on.

it's cyclical.

[-] TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world 7 points 6 months ago

you missed the point. they aren't frugal.

they just look frugal.

[-] Squizzy@lemmy.world 4 points 6 months ago

I think that is not necessarily true, just because they are wealthy does not mean they cannot then enjoy living frugally as a part of their chosen lifestyle.

Had a real waking up moment last week leaving one of my favorite venues seeing the band Chat Pile in a crowd of crusty, unwashed, punks, only to look at the parking lot after the show and see it filled with current model year Teslas, Mercedes, etc.

[-] scytale@lemm.ee 36 points 6 months ago

To be fair, there are also cases especially for older bands where their fanbase who were teens and young adults during their prime are now 40-50 year olds with families and are better off financially than they were back then.

[-] Son_of_dad@lemmy.world 8 points 6 months ago

How anyone can financially improve right now is beyond me

[-] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 6 points 6 months ago

They can't. Gen X was the last generation that got wealthier with age and it's gotten progressively worse for every subsequent generation.

Describes every major festival since the 2000s

[-] HubertManne@kbin.social 7 points 6 months ago

I mean give the price of tickets. I have went to like 3 concerts (paid for rock ones) in my lifetime and never to a festival that had admission.

[-] spicethedirt@lemmy.world 3 points 6 months ago

Love Chat Pile! Actually saw them on Saturday night in Chattanooga, on their new tour with Portrayal of Guilt. They always put on a fantastic show.

That's just called Burning Man

[-] Sizzler@slrpnk.net 1 points 6 months ago

Is that like your brother or what?

[-] purpleprophy@feddit.uk 32 points 6 months ago

You'll never live like common people. You'll never do whatever common people do.

They say you can always spot them by their teeth.

[-] Son_of_dad@lemmy.world 31 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

And their expensive dye jobs and tattoos. I saw a woman panhandling downtown the other day, wearing brand new Asics, with full sleeve tattoos and bright purple hair. Fuck that honestly, i wish I had tattoo money. Not only that, they see you pushing a stroller and beg for money. Every cent I have belongs to my kids, you entitled, fake poor pricks. The wealthy Western kids that Panhandle while traveling are by far the most deplorable though

[-] rottingleaf@lemmy.zip 3 points 6 months ago

Reminds me of portrayal of societies "kinda like Middle East" in American sci-fi shows.

[-] TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world 8 points 6 months ago

this is the culture of most of my city. lots of people in very expensive clothes, beards, and etc that make them look like semi homeless bums. who work for a tech company and are banking six figures.

[-] Potatos_are_not_friends@lemmy.world 10 points 6 months ago

Tech people look like semi homeless bums because we don't know how to dress ourselves. We aren't buying expensive clothes. We're spending our money on hardware, goofy nerdy shit, or investing in stonks for some reason.

[-] Croquette@sh.itjust.works 7 points 6 months ago

You'll be sitting all day, might as well be comfortable.

[-] Behaviorbabe@kbin.social 7 points 6 months ago

I don’t give my money to anyone, usually. Except specifically some nader chasers I’ve
followed for years. They’re out there losing windshields for my enjoyment. That’s it tho.

[-] Sanctus@lemmy.world 4 points 6 months ago

Now thats what I call appropriating.

[-] Tregetour@lemdro.id 4 points 6 months ago

The rich have always imitated the rest of us.

Tattoos used to see you barred from many military and civil service organizations. Now ink is considered cosmopolitan and they're allowed.

Low-income service workers used to occupy the top floors of residential buildings, and even set up makeshift accomodation on building roofs. They called them penthouses.

Look at the shift in treatment of marijuana in the United States over the last decade.

like half of the Grateful Dead tour on the late 80s and early 90s

[-] AncientFutureNow@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

This guy sucks.

FYI: Trustafarian is a word that has been used for at least 25 years. He thinks its new.

Anyways, I digress. Most trustafarians also suck, but this guy sucks for entirely different reasons.

[-] xnx@slrpnk.net 9 points 6 months ago

I’m not familiar with him, why does he suck?

We used to use the term in the mid 90s to describe the kids hanging out in Berkeley begging for cigarette money, then getting picked up in Mercs to get driven home in the hills. They were usually white kids with dreads.

They were dumbass kids. I'm sure the current batch are dumasses too I was never a fan, but in the scheme of things, there is a lot worse out there.
