Alright folks. Let's take a breather. Locking this post. I've had more reports on this post than we've ever had in the subs history.

Things can get heated, but remember we're all here for the love of gardening. Text can be misunderstood with the lack of nonverbal cues. Going forward let's give each other the benefit of the doubt.

Be careful planting these (or having them in the home) if you or your neighbors have cats. This plant is extremely toxic and can cause kidney failure!

They look great tho outside of this PSA.

[-] SchmidtGenetics@lemmy.world -1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Outdoor cats (any animal) at wild are illegal outdoors in my city, so that’s more the owners issue here, but great PSA, we will definitely have to be careful if we cut them and bring them in the house though, we have indoor cats. I always try to wash my hands after handling the bulbs/blooms.

Edit, the person has reiterated their stance multiple times while claiming their point is about the plant inside….

To quote another comment of theirs.

I guess I was trying to point that if you care about the cats in your neighborhood maybe you forego the pretty flower.

Quit telling people what to plant in their yards dude, if you can’t control your animals that’s on you, if you ask your neighbor to not plant a flower because your cat constantly escapes, they would laugh at you. This is exactly what you did in your comment and reiterated multiple times. It wasn’t about it being inside.

[-] Sanguine@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

I would argue you shouldn't even bring them inside. The amounts necessary for toxicity are insanely low..like a bit of pollen, a small clipping of the leaves or stems, a small puddle of water left behind from rinsing; all of these are potentially toxic to your kitties.

Also side note, illegal or not, cats get out / get lost. Its a bit callous to hold the cats in your neighborhood up to standards of the "law" and careless owners / accidental runaways.

[-] SchmidtGenetics@lemmy.world -3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I think that’s a little alarmist to be honest, not all cats are allergic to Lilies, so to just blanket ban them is over the top, train your pets as well, it is a thing.

I have never had a single one of my cats get out in 2 decades, if you want to be careless that’s your fault, the general public isn’t going to go out of their to avoid planting stuff so muffins you constantly somehow let out doesn’t eat them. There’s also ways to address constant runaways, get a shock collar.

I’m sorry, take a little personal accountability for your pets and how you let them out, or do what a good pet owner should do, and fix the problem. Your PSA went from cute PSA to borderline propaganda real fast. Yeesh growmie.

The real PSA is outdoors cats are menace to nature and if you can’t keep them inside because you’re frankly a horrible pet owner, they deserve what happens. I’ll trap them if they come on my property, but the coyotes and bears will get them first before some flowers…. Don’t be an irresponsible pet owner, keep muffins inside, there is ZERO excuse, full stop.

[-] Sanguine@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Yikes, you really took that in a weird direction. Lot of judgement and assumption in your post. I've also never really had my cat get out but your delusional if you think that can't happen unless someone is completely careless or a shitty pet owner.

Explain which part is propaganda? ASPCA recommends contacting a vet immediately if you know your cat has been exposed; I'm being "alarmist" for a reason.

[-] SchmidtGenetics@lemmy.world -1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

The fact that you think people need to worry about what they plant because irresponsible pet owners can’t get their shit together. An outdoor (illegal or legal, still a moronic idea….) cat has a thousand other things to worry about, in fact I do believe if you’re going to be careless they should be eating or taking by a coyote. I have birdhouses and bird feeders, if people are negligent with their animals, I’m giving them a buffet. There is more than one perspective here and your exuding yours as gospel.

Fuck off lmfao. The cats can get fucked the bird population is far more important, but peddle for little muffin dude… yeesh.

[-] Sanguine@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

To be fair, my second post was more a suggestion you be a responsible pet owner and not bring Lillie's inside your home. The second part of my message was about how you said since its against the law for animals to be outside (lol) its not your problem as if the law controls where cats go or not go. I guess I was trying to point that if you care about the cats in your neighborhood maybe you forego the pretty flower.

[-] SchmidtGenetics@lemmy.world -4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I guess I was trying to point that if you care about the cats in your neighborhood maybe you forego the pretty flower.

I was trying to be polite and not bring up a derisive topic, especially since I knew your attitude about outside cats from your first comment.

They aren’t outside animals full stop never have been and never will be. Not even sorry, and they can get fucked, and so can your PSA about not planting lilies outside. Even if they’re legal, you should do the responsible thing for nature (and for you cat, they live 3x as long indoors as semi outdoors) and keep them inside.

If anything, letting your cat outside is the cruel act, you’re killing it in 5 years instead of giving it live a long healthy safe life for 15+ years.

I care about nature, that’s why I don’t care that an invasive predator might get what’s coming. Lmfao. But I’ll trap them first, but no love lost.

Get your priorities straight dude.

[-] Sanguine@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Oh yeah? You knew my stance lol? I'm 100% anti outdoor cat. Wtf are you talking about.

You live in a world where no one accidentally has their cat run away. Also that sentence about strays getting fucked really shows a lot about who you are.

Also again moving away from my main argument that lead to this part of the convo (post initial PSA); you should not be bringing lilys inside your home if you have cats. Its reckless..

[-] SchmidtGenetics@lemmy.world -3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Also that sentence about strays getting fucked really shows a lot about who you are.

You know what, strays don’t exist here…. So it’s not a problem, so how can it show who I am if it’s not something anyone here needs to concern themselves with? Any strays are eaten by wildlife as a snack, or trapped by residents or the humane society. That’s what a cooperative society that actually cares about nature can do…. Not whatever you are peddling or doing where you are.

Also again moving away from my main argument that lead to this part of the convo (post initial PSA); you should not be bringing lilys inside your home if you have cats. Its reckless..

Please go back and reread your first comment, because that’s not the case at all… you mentioned growing them outside and made an aside comment about indoors.

Be careful planting these (or having them in the home) if you or your neighbors have cats. This plant is extremely toxic and can cause kidney failure!

Yeesh buddy…. You lying about your point now? Because that’s all outdoor…. Yikes….

Nah clearly you aren’t anti outdoor cat, give your head a shake dude. Your first comment was concerned about muffins getting out that you somehow do every day… and constantly say there nothing you can do…. Nothing at all, he just wants to be outside….

[-] Sanguine@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

P o s t initial PSA comment was about not cutting them and bring them inside. Not responding to all of that. Enjoy your Lillys muffin.

[-] SchmidtGenetics@lemmy.world -3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

And we are talking about your original asinine point, and again on the inside lilies. Train your damn pets as well lmfao.

Either way, it’s not an issue if you aren’t an irresponsible pet owner….

Muffin can get fucked, just like your original PSA that you seem to want to now ignore you made…

Yeesh. This is exactly what you don’t stick you nose in other people’s business…

[-] Sanguine@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

You literally don't know which post I'm referring to.. You are talking about the first one, like literal OP and I'm talking about the one where I say "I would argue you shouldn't bring them inside"

Youre actually too mad to think. Imagine risking your pets life so you can bring some toxic shit inside your house instead of just enjoying them in your garden.

[-] euAppleHater@lemm.ee 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Don’t waste your time, this persons entire comment history is full of getting in the most ridiculous, off topic arguments. They need to take a tolerance break from the Internet.

Edit - Somebody once pointed out how weird the post structure involving someone listing a bunch of inline quotes then responding point by point is, and how it’s almost exclusively done by people who get super argumentative for no reason. Every time I see that type of quoting I know I’m in for a wild ride.

[-] Sanguine@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

As soon as I saw that 3 quote I knew I was done for 🤣

[-] SchmidtGenetics@lemmy.world -1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

People use quotes since when it comes to discussions like this, people like ignoring points.

Which not surprisingly, it’s exactly what the user was doing… notice how it only started to be done when the user started claiming they weren’t saying shit…? Yeah that’s why. They now want to ignore their first comment saying people need to not plant stuff outdoors because of muffin. Their other point only came up after and now they want to think that’s their original… so yeah sure I’m an ass for pointing out a troll and defending myself… right….

It’s called quoting conversations to avoid confusion, edits, and deletes, it’s not surprising that trolls that dont want their stuff quoted and pointed out. It makes it permanent for when you delete your shit people have context.

Yikes dude.

[-] penguinsAreRapists@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

I have these too, I call them my zombie lilies. Mine are already done blooming tho :(

[-] SchmidtGenetics@lemmy.world 0 points 1 week ago

Oh man, this is just the start of my Lille garden blooming, my roses bloomed a few days ago. My columbines are mostly spent, a second round of smaller flowers are coming through though.

[-] mom@nom.mom 2 points 1 week ago

These are gorgeous! Beautiful colors, and it looks like a lot more to come! ❤️

[-] Napdyn@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Hemerocallis for anyone interested in them

[-] SchmidtGenetics@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

I believe they are oriental Lilies, planted an assortment of oriental and asiatic iirc.

[-] mom@nom.mom 1 points 1 week ago

If they don't smell and tend to stay a lot shorter, they're more likely to be the asiatics. If they grow a lot taller and have a smell (that I personally love), they're probably the oriental type.

Trumpet and daylilies (along with lily of the valley, calla lily, toad lily, easter lily, turk's cap, and several others, are a lot easier to tell apart based on looks, but the Asiatic and Oriental types always confuse me until I smell them!

Some references (which, I have to use something as reference every year):

[-] SchmidtGenetics@lemmy.world -1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Thanks still learning, I even googled it before commenting and STILL fucked it up… uggh hahah. They are a foot tall, the others are 3-4 feet and haven’t started forming full bulbs yet. Made a post a few days ago.

Great comment growmie!

[-] mom@nom.mom 2 points 1 week ago

No worries! Like I said, I always have to check, between those 2. Looks like you'll have a ton coming in over the next weeks - of both!

So I guess I have a ton of the Asiatic lilies, a lot of the OT hybrid (also sometimes called Orienpet, but that sorta sounds silly to me), a few trumpets, and a couple oriental.
😁
Also, that many of the flowers that were sold as star gazer bulbs were definitely not.
