Obviously he has had an extensive career making films that talk about race, so it’s contradictory on the face of it for him to say “stop talking about it.” Okay, dude! Stop making films that talk about it then!
Yeah. It was an off the cuff remark and right before it he commented on Black History month as limiting black people’s history to just one month a year, which is plainly stupid. Are we offended that Veterans Day bans all appreciation of service folk the other 364 days a year? No.
He is rich and famous and would love to not have the “black actor” label applied to him but again, an extemporaneous comment by a celebrity does not make a thorough analysis that works for everyone.
Answer: you’re white, right? Few people who experience growing up black in America come away saying “what’s the big deal about race, anyway?”
If you want to know what the big deal is with being black, there’s wonderful tradition in American literature of telling you all about it. Pick up a copy of Black Boy by Richard Wright for a place to start.
Why are people making more of a thing out of it than they were 10 years ago? Well, my personal view is that the whole “just don’t talk about it and it will go away” has not worked. And has that ever worked for anything?
People say that everyone has the same opportunities now. But life outcomes for white and black people are statistically quite different and it’s due to more than just talking about race. So I think people are getting sick of being quiet about something that clearly matters, and are talking about it openly. Others are responding by saying that talking about it is the entire problem and is, itself, racist. This is about the dumbest shit ever IMHO but some people are just really sick of having to hear about it and as a sheltered white person you have little personal reason to care. That is unless you care about other people.

This article is mostly a week in the life of our modern detection and monitoring systems, but of course everyone is immediately sucked into the topic of armageddon. The more we can detect, the more insignificant or only mildly interesting objects we will become aware of. So get used to it. There’s going to be asteroid news in our future other than “END OF WORLD NIGH.”
On some sardonic humor level, sure. But I don’t think many people are actually ready to die tomorrow, and no one is ready for an impactor that does something in between like plunge us into 200 years of suffering because we can’t grow 70% of the crops we need.
Uh I’d just like to point out that a meter is m and a milimeter, which is shorter, is mm. So y’all apparently don’t make any bloody sense in metric either.
The impacts are not comparable but perhaps in terms of detection methods they are handled mostly the same. On the one hand, being able to detect a 27 inch asteroid doesn’t matter much but on the other hand, if you can detect something that small, maybe you can detect anything that does matter. Unfortunately, I don’t think asteroid size is the only factor in detectability. A lot of it has to do with which direction it is coming from and if that is functionally obscured by the Sun or other objects.
You’re talking about people who work at a high level and might not type that much code. Thats definitely a thing.
I’ve also got a junior front line engineer on my team who does literally nothing. It takes them 10x too long to do anything and they require so much help from seniors than it would be faster for them to do it themselves. One of the seniors told me “a sure fire way to make sure something doesn’t get done is to give it to them.”
But gosh, it isn’t 10% of them that are like this. No way. This person is 1 in 500.

Manzanita reminds me of my grandfather, passed on years since. There was a lot of it on his property and as a kid it was the only place I ever saw it. I’m happy that my current climate allows me to grow a couple. They help me remember.
