In the spirit of Lemmy/federation giving more power to the users. I want to let the users of this community vote on our first candidate for a new mod. This is a little risky because there has not been much time for community to form, but I think its a chance to set a good precedence.

Voter information

The candidate for a new mod: lemmy.world/u/forkball

My arguments for adding them as a mod:

  • Assuming its the same person, reddit.com/u/forkball was an active reddit user since 2011. And from briefly scanning their history on reddit and Lemmy, they seem like a good level headed person. I think they would be a good mod, but the voice of the community is what matters.
  • I have no mod experience and was always a complete reddit lurker, so it would be good to have a very active community member as a mod.

My arguments for not adding them:

  • Y'all are chill and not causing a lot of work for me. So at this instant I can handle the work load. Not sure how long that will last though.

How to place a vote

I hope to avoid bots so voting will take some effort.

To place a vote you must comment on this post (I wont count nested comments). Your comment must begin with "YES:" or "NO:" followed by no less than 4 words justifying your vote.

Votes must be submitted before June 29 at 06:00 UTC.

If we have more YES votes than NO votes, u/forkball will become a mod.

Here are examples of valid voting comments: "YES: because forkball both showers and thinks!" "NO: because they didn't give me an up doot"

Fineprint

Lemmy and moderating is still new to me so if this ends up being a really dumb move on my part for some reason I cannot foresee, I reserve the right to bail on this idea and try another method for community input. Things would need to get really nuts for me to bail on this vote.

I don't expect a huge number of votes, but if im wrong, it may take some time to tally the votes.

Edits

  • It seems implied, but only one vote per username. Feel free to report duplicates. I will also try to publish the counted votes so people can validate my tally.

YES: They're motivated and it's better to have a backup in case one mod is unavailable.

[-] Weirdmusic@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Tes, 'cause it sounds good to me

[-] vatlark@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Just so you know, this wont count as a vote. it either needs to start with "YES:" or "NO:". Without that i dont know if you think u/forkball as a mod "sounds good to me" or maybe you just think holding a vote "sounds good to me"

YES: even if the community is chill now, you don't know what can happen, look at bots currently trying to invade lemmy for example, getting help before problems could occur is always a good thing, better safe than sorry IMO.

Yes: We will need more mods, we are only behaving because we are distracted, the chaos will come. 😊

[-] Crackhappy@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

YES: Mostly because I want to see if this method of avoiding bots works.

Tried to tag you and @forkball in a different comment on this post, will you let me know if it worked or how to do it differently?

[-] forkball@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Hey guys, I am not u/forkball on reddit. I'm u/tottspot. Will make a post over there to verify. Just have an interest in getting involved in modding and offered to help. I consider myself a team player and have been a lurker at r/showerthoughts for years and wanted to get more involved over here. Cheers!

Wait I'm confused, does the OP even know who you are? Why are they putting you forward?

[-] forkball@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

I responded to this post OP made in this community a couple days ago and offered my services. OP and I do not know each other.

I don't think it's really necessary to know who @forkball was on reddit or anywhere, I was just saying I don't think they have that username on reddit for clarification. But if they aren't a bot and seem willing then welcome, I say, and thank you! I assume @vatlark can boot anyone who turns out to be a bad mod?

Also I think putting your names like that will let you both know about this message? Edit: maybe not, hmm

YES: thanks all

[-] justhach@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

YES: because this seems like something the other site wouldnt have the foresight of doing.

[-] pcjroyfz@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

YES: because forkball both showers and thinks!

[-] vatlark@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

YES: because forkball was a strong member of the reddit community and from their comment history seems to think for themselves.

[-] Poiar@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Is there a way you could make the Reddit forkball user upload/write something innocuous in Reddit, that you request the lemmy forkball user to write - to establish credibility?

[-] soupspoon@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

I don't think they're the same user, did this u/forkball say they are? They write differently, on different topics/teams, and honestly the reddit one seemed fairly grumpy. I say if a person seems decent and isn't a bot let em try and we can always register our complaints if needed.

[-] vatlark@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

i didn't ask, so I will now

[-] iRyu@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

YES: smart to get ahead of this and plan for the future

[-] V4uban@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

YES: he seems to be a good willing candidate

[-] Siddharta@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

YES: Always beneficial to have more than one mod, and if the community later disapproves it's easy to remedy.
