Probably more to do with the fact that he wouldn't allow various states to install a back door in the app.

Kind of ironic that he left Russia only to end up being arrested in the west for building a platform that the ruling class here can't control.

It's not ironic, it's well within the trend, if you're paying attention. How much time did Durov spend butting heads with Russian authorities? The media screamed their collective lungs out about ebil totalitarian Rashka stomping on freedoms. But he never got arrested and even trolled the courts - when they demanded encryption keys, he brought a ring with some random metal keys and said these were the only keys he could give.

In the same vein, have you heard about Dozhd (Дождь) TV channel? In ebil totalitarian Rashka, they've spent 12 years spewing libshit. Twelve years! Come SMO, they got kicked out and moved to le free liberal democratic Lithuania. A member of EU and NATO! Poor widdle guys bullied by ebil Rashka for being widdle and free! How long does Dozhd last there? Oh about four months.

It's all very much a trend, but admitting it would require one to be honest with oneself first and foremost

Indeed, at this point the west has become objectively more repressive than Russia. There's far more censorship, far more people get arrested for social media posts, and now EU is going after communication platforms. Meanwhile, Chomsky pointed out recently that the U.S. censorship is now worse than USSR during Stalin years https://scheerpost.com/2022/07/30/video-is-u-s-censorship-worse-than-soviet-russia/

It seems like people here agree that this arrest seems weird.

I don’t understand what he did wrong.

I don’t understand what he did wrong.

Created social media platform which went very popular but isn't controlled by US media oligopoly or their subsidiaries.

also one that's actually secure evidently

I don't understand if these are the charges, why they haven't arrested Zuckerberg for the same. The reason is that Pavel won't install backdoors into his app.

He really doesn’t need to install backdoors. In Germany we know since 2018 that the BKA (German federal criminal police office) can access Telegram accounts and everything they write easily just because most content in Telegram is not encrypted by default until today.

There was actually a german court case where the BKA told how they easily access Telegram accounts with a warrant without support from Telegram. And to be honest, if the BKA can access them, other three letter agencies will be able for sure. German agencies are not known for their technical skills.

I mean they could also arrest Marlinspike (Signal founder) or Acton if it was just for building a secure platform, since Signal is way more secure than Telegram but they walk free across the world.

Also why they don’t arrest Zuckerberg (or Marlinspike or Acton): Facebook at least tries to delete child porn and drug trade from their platform while Telegram seems to endorse this kind of content as long as it pushes their platform.
