I much prefer a flat fee monetization model.

The next question is will it actually be a paid premium download, eligible for family sharing, or will they structure it is a free download with a "full game unlock" IAP?

It’s available for preorder as an outright paid app, at least on Apple platforms.

It’s great news because it will now be available in other countries which ban F2P games with « gacha » mechanics. I think I will give it a try in December (but I have to get some info on it first, I like Animal Crossing games but I have no idea how good this mobile version is).

Why are they doing it? Legal troubles? I didn't see any explanation in the article.

The article links to a previous article about the online service for the free to play version shutting down. It looks like the Complete edition is an offline version where all the content will be available through gameplay without microtransactions, where the events will rotate every 4 years. HTH

Right, that's the article that doesn't explain why they're doing it.

Probably because they're shifting development work to something else. Doing it this way and making it run offline frees up developers.

It's reportedly been running for seven years, so I suppose I just assumed that they didn't want to pay to maintain the online service for all eternity.

The other reply's probably also got a good point in terms of actual staff doing support for it, too.
