Oh they're not confused. They're just lining up so that SCOTUS can ignore that just like they did when they came up with ceremonial deism.
They're hoping SCOTUS will decide that means no establishment of any one specific sect of Christianity but declare that America is a Christian country.
Of course, then they'll find out the hard way why the sectarianism happened in the first place and then the real fighting will begin.

Assuming the law doesn't mandate their desired beliefs, I am still waiting for the video of red-faced yelling at a school-board meeting after the tiniest mention (or perhaps a poorly-printed picture of the cover) of the Qur'an.

The idea that they know or care what's in the document that provides the supreme law of the land is already farcical but many of them like to RP as faithful followers of the founding fathers. If we're lucky, they'll eventually unravel when the opposing forces of cognitive dissonance become too great.
The Republican Party is turning into the Christian version of the Taliban. They hide under the "freedom" label, but only their kind of freedom is acceptable. If you depart slightly from their narrow definition of "religious liberty," it's not allowed. Or as the bible clearly states: "Freedom for me, not for thee."
PragerU and the fucking discovery institute are going to provide all of the materials to red state schools after Trump removes the DoE including slavery was good for slaves instead of teaching about the historic and current racial injustices inherent to the system, the US is Christian ignoring the enlightenment secular principles it was founded under, trans people aren't people instead of trans rights are human rights, and any social security for the working class is communism instead of the insane wealth imbalance worse than before the great depression or French revolution.
Haven't you been listening to them? The a GOP is at war against grooming and indoctrination...translated to normal people speak, that means they lust for indoctrination and grooming.
How else can they build a list of non-christians if the schools don't collect this information? Duh.
