All the mentionedinstances are fairly small with minimal activity except Division by Zero whose terms include no extreme right wing and no anti-science which makes me question their free speech commitment. Would they regard any questioning of the government's propaganda concerning COVID as anti-science and extreme right wing? I'm beginning to question whether Lemmy is irredeemable. I recently posted from another instance to communities outside that instance and while I was not censored by the instance from which I posted, I got tons of negative comments from Marxists. The trolls on Lemmy seem overwhelming.

Yea lemmy is pretty WAY far left in my experience and honest opinion. Honestly, you should try squabbles they are free speech. And probably try reddit again it's gotten better (Clearly still not free speech)

but it's been a little more bearable as their arnt as MUCH leftist there at least for right now.

I think lemmy will end up breaking off into so many echo Chambers, ppl will realize the farce of what the fediverse claims to be and go right back to reddit.

I give it to the end of the year or beginning of next year where everyone is right back to where they were

I had really hoped that instances that allowed more wide and varied opinions would naturally grow in size to be the largest. Instead de-federation has continue to cut and slice and separate anyone and everyone. It will never be able to compete with large centralize services like that.

Took the words right out of my mouth. Fucking absolutely agree. I also think their heads got hot when they started gaining reddit users.

I feel at some point they want to leverage that in some way to get out of their day jobs and make profit while incorporating even stricter rules.

I've seen beehaw say something about subscriptions in the Admin chat. Also selling merchandise (not sure if that's relevant) I think they WANT to become the next 'reddit' so they can get paid to censor speech.

Grow lemmy as big and powerful as they can so they can mass censor. And if any new servers want in well they gotta play by their rules.

That's just my conspiracy anyway. I've said before, MOB, ALLLLLLLLLLLLL they talk about on matrix is banning, defederating, censorship that's literally it.

They are obsessed

"we are willing to cut users that don't fit with what we are aiming for and think that instances sound have particular goals other then 'growth'"

Look at some of the shit they've said. Even talking about 'curating their user base '

Lemmy is irredeemable

it's just that right wing and libertarians aren't hosting instances, not that it can't be redeemed

left instances can be "trolled" within the rules plenty

[-] ihatetroons@exploding-heads.com 4 points 1 year ago

Division by Zero

Yeah super leftist. they're good for info on piracy and not much else

[-] delendum@lemdit.com 5 points 1 year ago

hey, I'm the admin of lemdit.com, thought I'd offer you my 2 cents.

Generally speaking anyone is welcome on Lemdit. We're not a political instance, nor are we a strictly 'free speech' one. What this means is any ideas are welcome irrespective of political lean, but slurs, attacks or calls for violence are not. To give you a concrete example, disagreeing with government covid policy is fine, calling people fags is not.

Lemdit is indeed a tiny instance. This isn't really an issue as far as content and engagement is concerned thanks to federation, but it does mean we're a very small fish that can be easily killed if we get defederated. We're not big enough to survive under our own content steam, so if you do join, please try to keep this in mind.

The only instances we've defederated are ones that host loli porn. In general, anything that can get us into legal trouble is gone on the spot (I don't mean the lemmy.world interpretation of legal). Otherwise I don't live in the US and I make it a point not to get involved in politics one way or the other, so you will not see me defederate or block anything based on politics.

Lemdit is also self-hosted and costs me very little to run, so this isn't a donations grift, we're not looking to grow at all costs, etc.

I really appreciate that you care to come over and tell us your position, and this is key for me:

This isn’t really an issue as far as content and engagement is concerned thanks to federation, but it does mean we’re a very small fish that can be easily killed if we get defederated. We’re not big enough to survive under our own content steam, so if you do join, please try to keep this in mind.

Basically, you may be forced to moderate, and to ban really confrontational, in your face sort of posts that are derogatory to avoid defed... Which is fair.

I think I may come over to your instance and participate in some stuff, all in godo faith, all with no slurs or name-calling, as that is against my religion. '

I'll probably get a totally diff useranme, though. Be unrecognizable. I actually did this when coming over to EH (some wolfballers will remmeber my original name; like 1-2 people may remember my Discussions name... I don't fully remember my discussions name, lol.)

No, Nostr is looking more promising.

But it's bookmarked.

U ?

[-] Sexypink@exploding-heads.com 2 points 1 year ago

Thank you I'll check you guys out !

Do you know if these are supposed to be free speech? Most of them seem like they haven't really posted well defined rules, except for dbzer0 -marxists.

Straylight and basedcount seem promising but really depends on if admins are cool with us or not and to what degree. personally i don't really want to invest too much in a place where we aren't welcome, especially on lemmy where we can be censored.

As a tech, I like lemmy featureset way way more than nostr so far but seems like we do really keep hitting a wall with censorship there.

Would non -lemmy, free-speech Reddit clones be an option in the meantime? I would be down for signing up on lotus or saidit or whatever as long as i can post stupid shit wo getting banned and people going to be there to bs with. Might try creating some alts today or tomorrow

I created a profile at based count. The chewy center of that instance is Political Compass Memes. And you need all four quadrants (including us) to make that work. So we should have a home there, in theory.

If it's anything like reddit's version it'll be irreverent and fun.

[-] ihatetroons@exploding-heads.com 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Do they still prevent users from creating their own subs? I think I had tried that one awhile back but gave up cuz it was only compass memes and 1 or 3 other subs. Unless I'm thinking of a different one?

Edit: just rechecked and it only has 3 subs so I think is same one. Would be more interested if it had at least freeforum and dankmemes subs but if only compass memes, books, and announcement seems a bit sparse

One of the recent posts over there is an admin asking what other communities should be created.

I'm of the opinion that less is more while an instance is young.

[-] ihatetroons@exploding-heads.com 3 points 1 year ago

Oh ok, yeah, that's cool. I thought maybe he only wanted what was there, but sounds like that's not it

Any clue if he ok with free speech stuff like what we do here? I'm not very familiar with it at all

I can't speak for his opinions on that point.

[-] ihatetroons@exploding-heads.com 2 points 11 months ago

fair enough; you just seemed more knowledgeable on it than me and wasn't sure if you were familiar with the admin at all. no worries tho

[-] logen@exploding-heads.com 3 points 1 year ago

I like lemm.ee. They are in favor of users blocking as needed rather than power tripping and defederating.

hexbear.net seems like a nice place from what I've seen. Far far left, but in a lulzy way. Haven't looked into their policies.

[-] logen@exploding-heads.com 3 points 1 year ago

Hexbear: "A leftist social platform centered around community building through discussion, shitposting memes, and sharing content."

Read through their rules, they seem reasonable enough. Though, they have no qlams about wielding a ban hammer.

Note: I'm used to leftists being very unreasonable, so maybe I'm giving them too much credit.

[-] Sexypink@exploding-heads.com 1 points 11 months ago

Which one have you joined?

[-] logen@exploding-heads.com 1 points 11 months ago

Just lemm.ee. I dislike having many accounts.

[-] squashkin@exploding-heads.com 3 points 1 year ago

add links.hackliberty.org maybe, they have been around since wolfballs days and someone mentioned them in another post; admittedly there seem to be few users there

[-] Sexypink@exploding-heads.com 2 points 1 year ago

Someone was saying they are still on 1.8.1 version and are exposed to ddos attacks so I kinda halted going forward on that. Plus when you sign up it takes you to their matrix server and you can't login online or in the app. Fucking odd

About that "ddos attacks vulnerability". It was cross site scripting vulnerability and as it seems they have updated now

[-] Sexypink@exploding-heads.com 4 points 1 year ago

Ok dope. Why is it that when I sign up to their server it takes me to their Matrix chat room instead of being able to log in to their instance it's weird

[-] ihatetroons@exploding-heads.com 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

They afraid you gonna troll the Bitcoin people over there lol

[-] Sexypink@exploding-heads.com 1 points 1 year ago

Oh my God lol 😆 Bitcoin is gay. Can't even buy ice cream with it. Fucking useless

[-] sxb 1 points 1 year ago

IDK. Try to close the matrix window and login with your details into lemmy

[-] yobama22@exploding-heads.com 1 points 11 months ago

Have you guys (and Alice) heard about this small cosy instance called lemmy.world ?
