As someone who eats a lot of green onion, can you tell me a bit about your set up?

It looks like a water cooler bottle you've cut openings at regular intervals, filled the bottom with dirt, then I'm guessing you've put the butts of scallions in the dirt in a ring close to the outside so the plants grow out the openings as they reach for sunlight. I'm interested in making something similar, so I'm curious if I'm missing anything. I can't really tell what's going on at the top (former bottom) of the water cooler and I'm not sure what the rope is for besides carrying it.

Youve got it right pretty much. The top part is an old milk jug ive cut the bottom off, and poked a small hole in the cap. This is because i noticed that when watering directly on the soil, the high water flow would dislodge a lot of the dirt and it woud fall out of the holes. By filling up the jug and letting it drip slowly through the hole in the cap that doesnt happen. Also yea the rope was for carrying. I wouldnt hang it from there in case it ripped (it actually ripped while i was moving it one day but thankfully it wasnt that high)

Looks like it could hang from a hook, saving floor space. Also looks like maybe a funnel for watering.

Alternatively, one can grow them in a pot. They like sun. Just poke the stumps in good soil, and water as needed. If you live where winter is cold, a sunny window would probably work.

Edit to caution: Don't grow indoors if you have a cat. Onions are toxic to pets and you can't keep it out of their reach, like you could with a dog.

Genuine question, not at all an attack, but what would the difference be between this and a regular plastic plant pot?

I'm not a materials scientist but you would think the edges of the cut holes are shedding particles in a larger degree than an intact pot. Wouldn't want that in something you're planning to ingest. My comment was made largely in jest, but I still think there's some truth to it, and we will look back on our plastic use with dread in the future.

im not so quick to put this down, it will work. I was also a little turned off by the plastic bottle, but just because I find them junky and gross.

a glass demijohn would be so much nicer, but then you'd need a diamond hole saw.. one for ceramic tiles might work

I also dislike the look of the plastic water cooler, but it's resourceful should you have the water cooler jugs anyway. I don't and I don't have access to em. That said, I bet I can fashion something similar out of other materials, though I'm curious if the transparent-ness of the plastic is helpful for the plant.

It looks sorta similar to a terracotta pot I've seen someone use for growing strawberries on a patio.

yeah for sure, I thought of the same thing. its clear that the transparent plasric is goo in that the sinlight van hit one side and nourish all of the plants without shadow

You can rotate it periodically to give sunlight to all sides, but on my balcony thats not really that necessary. We have strong sun and when its high in the sky it hits everything
